CLARION’S GENTILE NAMED AVCA HONORABLE MENTION ALL-AMERICA
Clarion University senior Libero Vicky Gentile (Euclid, Ohio/ Villa Angela-St. Joseph) was recently named an Honorable Mention American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-America.
Gentile is believed to be the first Clarion women’s volleyball player to earn All-America status after recently concluding a record-setting career for the Golden Eagles.
She is the school’s all-time leader in digs (2,559) and ranked second in the PSAC this season in digs per game (6.29) while recording 704 digs, the second most in a season in school history. She set the school record for digs in a season in 2004 with 711 and also ranks fourth (tie – 577) and sixth (567) in single-season digs at Clarion. An AVCA Atlantic Region selection and a second-team PSAC-West selection this season, Gentile was a 2004 second-team Daktronics Atlantic Region selection.
Gentile helped Clarion to a 28-6 overall record and 7-3 PSAC-West mark this season. The Golden Eagles earned their second straight and fifth trip in the last six season to the NCAA Division II Tournament and won the school’s first NCAA Playoff game with a 3-1 victory over Lees-McRae. The Golden Eagles also finished in second place in the PSAC, the school’s highest finishing since taking second in 1989, and the 28 wins are the third most in school history.
