Three Clarion University women’s volleyball players have been named to the 2004 Daktronics Division II Volleyball Atlantic All-Region team. Senior middle hitter Colleen Sherk (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and junior setter Ashley Kreiner (London, Ohio/London) are first-team selections and will now appear on the national All-America ballot, while freshman Libero Vicky Gentile (Euclid, Ohio/Villa Angela-St. Joseph) was a second-team choice. “I’m happy for all three players,” Clarion head coach Tracey Fluharty said. “They all worked very hard to achieve these honors.” Sherk led the Golden Eagles in kills per game (4.10) while finishing with 517 kills, the fifth most in a single season in school history, and a .399 hitting percentage, which ranked second in the PSAC and 13th in the nation. She was also second on the team in blocks with 105 (0.83 per game). In her career, Sherk finished third in school history in kills (1,216) and sixth in blocks (415). “Colleen got better and better every year,” Fluharty said. “She was a leader for us this season.” Kreiner, in her first season as a setter after being a defensive specialist/Libero her first two years at Clarion, set the school record for set assists in a season with 1,679 while averaging 13.33 set assists per game, which topped the PSAC and ranked 10th in the nation. She also added 134 kills, 299 digs, 79 blocks and 16 service aces. In her career, Kreiner is fifth in school history with 1,688 set assists and 9th with 1,095 digs. “Ashley made the transition to setter seamlessly this season,” Fluharty said. “She was a big part of the success we had.” Gentile had a sensational freshman campaign setting the school record for digs in a season with 711 while averaging 5.43 digs per game, which ranked fourth in the PSAC. “For Vicky to come and do what she did as a freshman is tremendous,” Fluharty said. “Going into the preseason there was a competition for the Libero spot, and we didn’t know what to expect. But Vicky rose to the challenge and had an outstanding season.” Sherk, Kreiner and Gentile helped the Golden Eagles finish 29-9 over and 6-4 in the PSAC-West. Clarion qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs for the third straight season while also qualifying for the PSAC playoffs outright for the first time since 1990.
