THREE GOLDEN EAGLE SPIKERS NAMED TO PSAC-WEST ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS

Three Clarion University women’s volleyball players have been named PSAC-West All-Conference including two first-team selections, seniors Melanie Bull and Jackie Hill, and one second-team selection, junior Colleen Sherk.

Bull (York/Susquehannock), an outside hitter, and Hill (York/Susquehannock), a setter, are both on the first team for the second straight year. Bull was also a second-team selection in 2001. Sherk (Wilmington, Del./Concord), a middle hitter, is making her first appearance as a PSAC-West selection.

"All three players are very deserving of the selections," Clarion’s third-year head coach Tracey Fluharty said. "Jackie is in control of our offense as the setter, Mel has been an offensive force and Colleen really stepped up this season on the offensive side of the net while continuing to perform well on the defensive side."

All three players have played key roles in Clarion’s successful 2003 campaign that includes a 26-9 record through Nov. 18 and the Golden Eagles second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Clarion plays Lees-McRae at 7 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Atlantic Region at Lock Haven.

Bull has been Clarion’s top offensive force with 577 kills, while also leading the team with 515 digs. She also has 46 service aces and 58 blocks. The 577 kills are a school record breaking her own mark of 548 set in 2002. In her career, she is Clarion’s all-time leader in kills (1,919) and digs (1,992) while also holding the single-season school record in digs (602) in 2001. Bull’s 4.85 kills per game leads the PSAC, while her 4.33 digs per game are good for seventh in the conference.

Hill has been the quarterback of Clarion’s attack the last four years and has 1,388 set assists this season, the fifth most in school history (she also sits 1, 2 and 4 on the all-time list), while adding 367 digs, 45 service aces, 84 blocks and 75 kills. She is the schools all-time set assist leader (5,809) and holds the single-season set assists mark (1,552 - 2001) while also sitting second on the school’s all-time digs list (1,450). Her 11.97 assists per game this year rank fourth in the PSAC.

Sherk is second on the team in both kills (424) and blocks (156) this season and has 688 career kills and 309 career blocks. Her 1.31 blocks per game ranks second in the PSAC, while here 3.56 kills per game ranks ninth in the PSAC.
