GOLDEN EAGLES CLOSE REGULAR SEASON WITH WIN OVER EDIBORO

Clarion University’s women’s volleyball team closed out the 2002 regular season with a 3-1 win over Edinboro Saturday afternoon at Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles won by scores of 33-31, 22-30, 32-30 and 30-24.

Clarion, 31-4 overall and 7-3 in the PSAC-West, now waits to see if it will qualify for the NCAA Division II Regional Playoffs, which will be announced next week. The Golden Eagles are all but a lock to go to the tournament having come into the Edinboro match ranked third in the East Region behind Edinboro and IUP. Three at-large teams will be taken after the champions of the three conferences in the East Region are awarded bids.

Junior outside hitter Melanie Bull led the way for Clarion with 18 kills and 30 digs. With the 18 kills she become the single-season kills leader in Clarion history with 528 bettering the mark of 522 set in 1990 by Jodi Pezek.

Jackie Hill set up many of Bull’s kills with 42 set assists against Edinboro. She also had 15 digs and two kills. Laurie Hepler added 28 digs, while Tonya Zatko had 13 kills and five blocks.

NOTES: The 31 wins are a school record, and the seven PSAC-West wins are the most for Clarion since the 1997 team also went 7-3.
