GOLDEN EAGLE WON FIFTH AFTER FIRST DAY OF PSAC INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

EAST STROUDSBURG – Behind two Top 5 relay teams, the Clarion University women’s indoor track and field team finds itself in fifth place after Day One of the 2007 PSAC Championships.

 

The Golden Eagles have 13 points and are two points behind Lock Haven for fourth place and four behind Millersville for third.

 

Clarion was able to get into the Top 5 thanks to its Distance Medley Relay team and its 4x800 relay team.

 

The DMR of Suzanne Schwerer, Kate Ehrensberger, Jamie Miller and Erin Richard finished third in a time of 12:26.85 to earn six points, while the 4x800 team of Schwerer,

 

Richard, Amanda Maholtz and Lisa Nickel took fifth in a time of 9:54.81 to earn four points.

 

Clarion also got three points from Tasha Wheatley, who finished sixth in the 5,000 in a time of 18:31.98.

 

In addition to the point scorers, Clarion has got a pleasant surprise when Diane Kress qualified for Sunday’s finals in the 55 hurdles by taking eighth in the preliminaries in a school-record time of 8.83.

 

Meanwhile, the Golden Eagle men’s team didn’t score any points Saturday but set itself up for the possibility to score Sunday by qualifying two runners for Sunday’s finals in four events.

 

Frank Ehrensberger qualified in both the 200 and 400, while Dan Patton qualified in the 55 and 200. Ehrensberger was eighth in the 200 (22.82) and sixth in the 400 (50.2), while Patton was sixth in the 55 (6.57) and fifth in the 200 (22.59).

 

Clarion also set a school record in the 4x800 relay in a time of 8:39.08. The relay team of Mark Simbeck, Travis Cyphert, Bill Herrmann and BJ Roth missed scoring by one place taking ninth.

 

The Golden Eagles will conclude the 2007 championships Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
