JARZAB, BEVEVINO SCORE FOR CLARION ON FIRST DAY OF PSAC TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS Katie Jarzab and Ben Bevevino each scored for the Clarion University track and field teams Friday on the first day of full competition at the 2006 PSAC Track and Field Championships at California. Jarzab finished sixth in the 10,000 in a time of 39:18.16 earning three points for the Golden Eagles women’s team, while Bevevino was eighth in the long jump with a leap of 21-3 earning one point for the Clarion men’s team. After one day of competition, Clarion’s women stood in 10th place with the three points while the men’s team was 13th with the single tally. Two Golden Eagles women’s athletes also advanced to championship races Saturday with their times in Friday’s qualifying heats. Sonya Swanson finished sixth in the 200 preliminary race in a time of 25.87 with the top eight advancing to Saturday’s title contest, while Holly Urban was fourth in the 800 in a time of 2:17.06 with the top eight advancing to Saturday. Both runners will score as long as they finish Saturday’s races. Swanson just missed advancing in the 400 finishing ninth with the top eight advancing, and she was 11th in the 100. Kiesha Perry also just missed advancing to the finals in the 800 finishing ninth, while Kate Ehrensberger was 11th in the race. In the 100 hurdles preliminary race, Brittani Card finished 11th and Andrea Strickenberger 12th with the top eight moving onto Saturday. In two finals events Friday, Erin Jones finished 18th in the pole vault (8-6), and Diane Kress was 9th in the long jump (16-6) just missing scoring. In men’s action, Jarrett Williams was 10th in the 200 and 12th in the 100 in preliminary races with the top eight moving on, while Mark Simbeck just missed qualifying for Saturday in the 400 hurdles finishing ninth with the top eight advancing. Both Clarion teams return to action Saturday at the championships. In addition Swanson and Urban, the Golden Eagles women’s team will have six other athletes in action Saturday. Scheduled to participate are Jarzab in the 5,000, Kress in the triple jump, Erin Richard in the 1,500 and 3,000, Tasha Wheatley in the 3,000 Steeplechase and 3,000, Autumn Shaffer in the 3,000 Steeplechase and Nicole Lockwood in the discus. The Clarion men’s team has two athletes scheduled to compete Saturday with Chris Clark running in the 5,000 and Sean McFarland in the 5,000.
