SLIPPERY ROCK EDGES CLARION 33-24
(CLARION, PA.): Slippery Rock tailback Dorrian Glenn scored on a 25-yard run
with 1:11 to play and give the Rockets a 33-24 win over Clarion in a rugged
PSAC-West contest held at Memorial Stadium.
Slippery Rock raised its overall record to 4-3 and 2-3 in the PSAC-
West, while Clarion dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC-West.
Glenn finished the day with 200 yards and 3 td’s on 28 carries, including a
44-yard td run in the first quarter.
Clarion fullback Demetric Gardner had a record day for the Golden Eagles.
Gardner rushed for a single game record of 257 yards on 30 carries. Gardner
broke Mickey Catello’s former record of 256 yards set in 1966 against IUP.
Clarion trailed the Rock 26-18 late in the fourth quarter when the Golden
Eagles scored on a 4th down, 28-yard pass from Adam Almashy to Mike McCullum
with only 3:57 left in the game. Clarion’s Robert Walker was stopped inches
short on the two-point conversion run to keep the Rockets ahead 26-24.
Slippery Rock converted a key third and fourth down on its final drive. Glenn
dashed 44 yards on 3rd and 10 at its own 28, then scored his final td on a
25-yard run on fourth and 7 at the Clarion 25 to secure the victory.
The game opened with Glenn running 44 yards to paydirt with 6:37 left in the
first and a 7-0 Rocket lead.
The Golden Eagles roared back when Gardner ran 72 yards on Clarion’s first
play following the kickoff, but the PAT was blocked and SRU held onto a 7-6
lead.
Clarion’s Chris Janson recovered an SRU fumble on the kickoff at the Rocket 14
yard line setting the Eagles up for their second score. Robert Walker capped
the drive with a 2 yard run with 4:56 left in the first. The two point
conversion failed, but Clarion led 12-7.
Slippery Rock placekicker Wyatt Campbell gave the Rockets a 13-12 halftime
lead with two field goals. The first was a 35-yarder at 0:46 of the first, and
the second was a 36-yarder with 5:07 left in the second.
Glenn put Slippery Rock ahead 19-12 on a 17-yard scoring run with 12:19 left
in the third quarter.
Clarion placekicker Jason Flora’s two field goals brought Clarion to within
19-18. Flora booted a 28-yard field goal at 5:05 of the third, then followed
with a 23-yarder with 0:32 left in the third.
SRU’s D.J. Flick switched the momentum back to the Rockets on the ensuing
kickoff when he returned the pigskin 97-yards for a big touchdown. With
14-seconds left in the third quarter the Rockets move out to a 26-18 lead,
setting up the game’s final minutes.
Clarion won the statistical battle notching 455 yards of total offense to
Slippery Rock’s 267, first downs to 20-10, and time of possession 33:06 to
26:54.
Clarion rushed for 318 yards and passed for 137. Gardner had 30 rushes for 257
yards and 1 td. Walker had 28 yards and 1 td on 10 tries. Mike McCullum
grabbed 4 passes for 71 yards and 1 td.
Slippery Rock rushed for 174 yards and passed for 93. Glenn gained 200 yards
and 3 td’s on 28 carries. Ryan McKavish grabbed 4 passes for 25 yards.
Clarion’s Chris Janson led the defense with 14 tackles, 3 tfl’s, 1 sack and 1
fumble recovery, while Korey Eppinette had 10 stops.
Clarion entertains PSAC-West leading IUP next Saturday, while Slippery Rock
hosts Lock Haven.
