GOLDEN EAGLE FOOTBALL

CLARION VISITS SHIPPENSBURG TO OPEN PSAC-WEST TITLE DEFENSE SATURDAY

After defeating Tiffin 27-14 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, the Golden Eagles begin defending their PSAC-West title this week as Clarion travels to Shippensburg for a key PSAC-West game. Kickoff at Shippensburg's Seth Grove Stadium is set for 1pm.

The game will air on WCCR-FM, 92.7 with Mike Kalinowski and Dave Katis providing the call. Clarion football fans not able to tune in can also listen to the game over the internet at www.redzonemedia.com.

The Golden Eagles, under eighth year head coach Malen Luke, enter the game with a 1-2 overall record. Clarion started the year with a last minute loss at East Stroudsburg (33-27), and a loss at #3 ranked NCAA Div. I-AA Youngstown State (44-0), before toppling Tiffin 27-14. Luke has a Clarion record of 38-41 overall and a PSAC-West slate of 20-22. In his 14th year as a collegiate head coach (6 at Defiance), he has a career record of 75-62.

Shippensburg, under veteran head coach Rocky Rees, has led the Red Raiders to a very deceiving 1-2 start in 2001. Ship opened the season with a 28-25 overtime loss at Shepherd, and then lost 29-18 at Bloomsburg (2000 NCAA runner-up) before defeating Millersville on Saturday 17-7. Rees, in his 12th season at Shippensburg, has a record of 62-62-1, and an overall collegiate record of 98-77-2 in 17 seasons.

The Golden Eagles, who were 7-4 overall a year ago and 5-1 in the PSAC-West, are hoping to follow last year's formula to finish atop the division. Last year's team also started with two losses and a win on their way to a strong finish. The 2000 Eagles defeated Shippensburg in a wild 56-49 game at Clarion's Memorial Stadium. Clarion built a 56-21 lead with 1:14 left in the third quarter, then held on for the victory. QB Adam Almashy tossed 5 td passes in that game, including 2 to Mike McCullum. Shippensburg's Chris Gicking also tossed 5 td passes, but he has graduated.

"We are very impressed with everything we've seen so far on Shippensburg," said Clarion's Luke. "They have a very strong running game and compliment that with a solid passing attack on offense. Defensively they are very tough against the run and play very physical football. Just as in past years, we expect a very hard-hitting, physical game. We know Rocky will have them ready for Saturday."

Clarion's offense is getting 306.3 yards per game (12th in PSAC), including 212.7 rushing (3rd in PSAC) and 93.7 passing (14th in PSAC).
