EAST STROUDSBURG 33 CLARION 27 (EAST STROUDSBURG, PA):
East Stroudsburg tailback Andre Castiglioni scampered for a 16-yard touchdown run with 1:53 left in the game to give the Warriors a 33-27 win over Clarion University on Thursday night in the opening game of the 2001 season for both teams.
The game was held at East Stroudsburg South High School and Memorial Field as part of the ESYA Football Classic.
Castiglioni's run came capped an 83-yard drive on 7 plays and came on third and goal at the Clarion 16 yard line.
Clarion rallied from a 20-point third quarter deficit to tie the game with 3:51 left as Golden Eagle quarterback Adam Almashy hooked up with tight end Andy Pore on a 21 yard touchdown pass. Jason Flora's extra point tied the game 27-27 and set up Castiglioni's game winning score.
East Stroudsburg stormed to a 14-0 lead as ESU quarterback Jeremy Palm tossed touchdown passes of 61 and 16 yards to John Kotarsky.
After Mike Berry's field goal gave ESU a 17-0 lead at 8:32 of the second quarter, Clarion fullback Demetric Gardner scored on a 33-yard run to cut the deficit to 17-7.
Berry's 41-yard field goal with seven seconds left before intermission gave the Warriors a 20-7 lead at halftime.
ESU expanded their lead to 27-7 at 9:32 of the third quarter when fullback A.J. Oliveri scored on a 1-yard run.
Clarion stormed back behind the running of halfback Robert Walker. Walker scored on a 6-yard run with 3:39 left in the third to make it 27-14 ESU.
Clarion recovered an Andre Castiglioni fumble at the East Stroudsburg 24 yard line which set up the Eagles next touchdown. Walker capped the short drive with a 3-yard run on fourth and goal from the three to cut the lead to 27-20. Clarion missed the PAT.
Clarion then drove 77-yards on 7 plays, with Almashy's pass over the middle to Pore for the 21-yard touchdown tying the game at 27-27.
ESU then drove for its winning score going 83-yards in 7 plays. Castiglioni converted a key third and ten at the ESU 17, when he scampered 32-yards on a draw play, setting up his game-winner.
Castiglioni rushed 29 times for 149 yards and 1 td, while receiver John Kotarsky grabbed 5 passes for 167 yards and 2 td's. QB Palm completed 8 of 24 passes for 201 yards and 2 td's.
Clarion's Demetric Gardner gained 108 yards and rushed for 1 td on 15 tries. Robert Walker rushed 12 times for 66 yards and 2 scores. Tight end Andy Pore grabbed 3 passes for 44 yards and 1 td.
East Stroudsburg outgained Clarion 396 - 302 in total offense. ESU had 195 rushing and 205 passing. Clarion posted 209 rushing and 93 passing.
Clarion will travel to Youngstown State on Saturday, September 8th for a 7pm game. ESU will host PSAC-East rival West Chester on Saturday, September 8th 1:05pm.
