CLARION DEFEATS CALIFORNIA 29-22 IN PSAC-WEST CLASH

         (CLARION, PA): Clarion quarterback Adam Almashy ran for 120 yards and 2 td's, and Demetric Gardner scored the game-winning touchdown with 9:01 left as the Golden Eagles rallied to defeat California (Pa.) 29-22 in a key PSAC-West game. The game was held at Clarion's Memorial Stadium with 1,234 looking on.

         Clarion upped its record to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC-West, while California, who was ranked 6th in the Eastern Region entering the game, dropped to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC-West.

         Clarion trailed 22-14 at halftime, but took the second half kickoff and drove 81 yards in six plays to tie the game at 22. Glenn Lovelace capped the drive with a 17-yard touchdown run, then Almashy converted the two-point run and the game was tied.

         The Golden Eagles took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter when Almashy led Clarion on a 70-yard scoring drive in 12 plays. Almashy rushed four consecutive times to the Clarion 48. Gardner led the remainder of the scoring drive carrying 5 times for 39 yards, including the two-yard touchdown run that put Clarion ahead for good.

         California's last drive started at its own 8 with 1:24 left, but ended on the Cal 10 with 1 second left in the game.

         Cal opened the game with a 7-0 lead after Dustin Strayer completed a 68-yard pass to Clint Alexander at 8:21 of the first.

         Clarion roared back to take a 14-7 lead on two, six-yard touchdown runs by Adam Almashy. The first score came at 5:29 of the first and capped a 56-yard, 8 play scoring drive. The second came at 9:11 of the second quarter and completed an 8-play, 39-yard drive. The Eagles were set up for the score after Myron Hargon intercepted at Brandon LeDonne pass at the Clarion 38 and returned the ball 23 yards to the Cal 39.

         Cal drove 60 yards late in the second quarter to turn the momentum. All-America running back Wesley Cates scored on a 12-yard run at 4:28, but the PAT was blocked by Clarion's Doug Diegelman and the Vulcans still trailed 14-13.

         On the ensuing kickoff Clarion's Mike McCullum tried the return the kickoff, but was hit by Cal's Nate Brown, fumbled backwards into the endzone and was recovered by Clarion for a safety. Cal led 15-14.

         After the free kick was returned to mid-field, the Vulcans drove 50-yards in only 8 plays to take a 22-14 halftime advantage. Cates capped the drive with a 5-yard run.

         Clarion's Almashy finished the game with 21 rushes for 120 yards and 2 td's, while completing 2 of 9 passes for 52 yards. Gardner also ran 15 times for 78 yards and 1 td, while Lovelace had 9 carries for 65 yards and 1 td. The Golden Eagles had 362 yards of offense and possessed the pigskin almomst 20 minutes in the second half. Clarion rushed for 310 yards and passed for 52.

         Cal's offense had 292 yards with 134 rushing and 158 passing. Wesley Cates posted 24 carries for 102 yards, including 99 at halftime. LeDonne completed 7 of 20 aerials for 80 yards, and Strayer hit of 2 of 2 passes for 78 yards and 1 td.

         Dennis Yu led Clarion's defense with 11 tackles and 1 tfl, while Korey Eppinette had 9 hits and a tfl, and Emil Johnson had 8 stops and 2 tfl's.

         Jamal Colbert posted 12 tackles and Jim Lukacs 11 stops for California.

         Clarion travels to Edinboro next Saturday, while California returns home to host Slippery Rock.
