CLARION’S LISA BAUMGARTNER WINS NCAA D-II SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

            Clarion Women’s Tennis Player Lisa Baumgartner (West Middlesex/ Wilmington), was recently honored by being named the winner of the 2007 NCAA Division II Sportsmanship Award. The award represented all Division II Athletes.

            Baumgartner, a senior, Speech Pathology and Audiology major at Clarion, is carrying a 4.0 cumulative grade point average and has been a four-year starter on the Golden Eagle Women’s Tennis Team.

            “Lisa has earned this award because of her exemplary character and sportsmanship both on and off the tennis courts and the positive way she lives her life which is full of compassion, dedication and integrity,” said Clarion Women’s Tennis Coach Lori Sabatose.

            In the 2006-07 season Lisa posted a combined singles record of 12-9 (Mostly #2 singles) and a doubles mark of 18-4 at #2 doubles. The team overall was 13-6 in dual meets and 2-2 in the PSAC-West. She was named to the PSAC’s Academic Top 10 and is a Clarion and PSAC Scholar Athlete.

            In the Fall of 2007 Lisa put together a singles record of 5-3 and a doubles mark of 6-5. Her other tennis records show her being 14-1 in singles play at Clarion in 2004-05 and 8-2 in doubles and named a first  team PSAC-West selection. She was 14-9 in singles in 2005-06 and 13-6 in doubles.

“The entire Clarion University community congratulates Lisa on winning the NCAA Division II Sportsmanship Award,” said Clarion President Dr. Joseph Grunenwald. “Lisa has a commitment to excellence in everything she does and she is the epitome of what is meant by the term scholar/athlete.”

 

CLARION NOTES: Lisa was presented with her national award by Clarion President Dr. Joseph Grunenwald at halftime of the Clarion versus IUP football game on October 27th… Accepting the award with Lisa were her parents John and Marsha Baumgartner, her brother Jason and her sister Rebecca… Coach Sabatose reported that Lisa had not missed a practice in four years … Lisa also volunteers with he American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, Special Olympics and countless campus activities.
