CLARION WOMEN LEAD RAMS BY 112 POINTS
WEST CHESTER MEN AHEAD OF CLARION BY 78 POINTS
(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion University’s Women and West Chester’s Men expanded their leads on Friday night on Day 3 of the PSAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
The 31st Women’s and 48th Men’s PSAC Championship events are being held at Clarion’s Waldo S. Tippin Natatorium and will conclude with finals on Saturday night.
Clarion’s women expanded their lead from 67.5 points on Thursday to 112 points on Friday night. Clarion leads with a team total of 658.5 points, West Chester is second with 546.5 and IUP is third with 400 points. Rounding out the thirteen team field are fourth place Bloomsburg at 320, Lock Haven fifth with 291, Shippensburg sixth with 285.5, California seventh with 230.5, Edinboro eighth with 210, Kutztown ninth with 195, Slippery Rock tenth with 161, East Stroudsburg eleventh with 106, Millersville twelfth at 79 and Mansfield thirteenth with 60.
In the women’s events West Chester won both the 200 medley relay (1:47.05) and the 800 free relay (7:40.34). West Chester’s Tammy Leane won the 400 IM (4:23.50), while teammates Kori Kilfeather (100 fly – 56.86) and Kathrin Dumitru (100 breaststroke – 1:03.29) were also individual winners.
Other women’s winners on Friday included Bloomsburg’s Dianna Smith in the 200 freestyle (1:55.27) and IUP’s Luci Plaxton in the 100 backstroke (58.38).
Clarion’s women were second in the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay, while again depth scoring helped expand the Golden Eagles team lead. In the 400 IM Clarion saw Stacey Humienny third, Katie Kuntz fourth and Jess Kretz sixth. Brehan Heebner was fourth in the 100 fly, with Kristy Clarke fifth and Brittany Hanzl sixth in the 200 free. Clarion’s Denise Simens (4th) and Sari Cattoni (5th) in the 100 breaststroke and Lori Leitzinger (3rd) in the 100 backstroke led the team.
West Chester’s Men expanded their lead from 29 points on Thursday to 78 points on Friday. The Golden Rams are in first place with 416 points, Clarion second with 338, Shippensburg third with 198, IUP fourth at 176, Bloomsburg fifth with 147, Kutztown sixth with 101, Edinboro seventh with 67 and Slippery Rock eighth with 48 points.
West Chester’s men also won both the 200 medley relay (1:32.98) and the 800 free relay (6:57.12).
In individual events West Chester’s Jordy Troyan won the 400 IM (4:04.26), teammate Devin Canfield won both the 100 butterfly (51.15) and the 100 backstroke (51.87), and Jeremy Sherin took the 100 breaststroke (58.57).
Also posting a win Friday was Shippensburg’s Mike Owen in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.73.
Clarion’s top performers on the night included Andy Wolverton (3rd), Mike Chesterfield fifth and Kyle Wamelink sixth in the 400 IM, with Mike Cohen (4th) and Adam Smearman (6th) in the 100 fly. Eagle Dan Walley was third in the 200 free, Kevin McCracken (5th) and James Rankin (6th) in the 100 breaststroke, while Chris Jones was third and Mike Kerr fourth in the 100 backstroke.
Saturday is the final day at the PSAC’s with six events taking place in both championships. Saturday’s events include the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 free relay. The prelims begin at 10am, with the finals starting Friday night at 6pm. Tickets are available at the door.
