CLARION WOMEN LEAD RAMS BY 67.5 POINTS
WEST CHESTER MEN AHEAD OF CLARION BY 29 POINTS
(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion University’s Women and West Chester’s Men have the early lead after one full day of competition at the PSAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
The 31st Women’s and 48th Men’s PSAC Championship events are being held at Clarion’s Waldo S. Tippin Natatorium and will continue with finals on Friday, then conclude the championships on Saturday night.
Clarion’s women jumped out in front by 67.5 points tonight with a team total of 317 points. Second place West Chester has 249.5, IUP is third with 192, Bloomsburg fourth at 170, Shippensburg fifth with 135.5, Lock Haven sixth at 124, Edinboro seventh with 112, California eighth with 104, Kutztown ninth with 80, Slippery Rock tenth with 68, Millersville eleventh at 44 and Mansfield twelfth with 18.
In the women’s events, Clarion posted a big win in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.30 swum by Brittany Hanzl, Stacy Ogden, Melanie REade and Kristy Clarke.
West Chester’s Tammy Leane won the 200 IM (2:05.18), while Leane was also part of the winning 400 medley relay (3:52.65).
Other winning performances in women’s events tonight had Shippensburg’s Courtney Houston winning the 500 free (5:08.97) and IUP’s Luci Plaxton taking the 50 free (24.33).
Clarion scored plenty tonight in place points. Top individual placings went to Sarah Besecker (3rd – 500 free), Brittany Hanzl (4th – 50 free), Sari Cattoni (3rd – 200 IM) and the 400 medley relay team finishing second.
West Chester’s Men are in first place with 190 points, Clarion second with 161, Shippensburg third with 93, IUP fourth at 90, Bloomsburg fifth with 79, Kutztown sixth with 39, Edinboro seventh with 32 and Slippery Rock eighth with 10.
Leading the Golden Rams was Jordy Troyan who won the 200 IM (1:53.89) and teammate Reggie Shearer who won the 50 freestyle (20.76). West Chester’s 400 Medley relay of Devin Canfield, Jeremy Sherin, Joerg Zimmermann and Shearer (3:25.03) won the final event.
Clarion opened the night winning the 200 free relay (1:23.16) behind Chris Jones, Mike Cohen, James Rankin and Adley Kilgore. Also posting a win tonight was Shippensburg’s Mike Owen in the 500 free (4:36.92).
Clarion also saw Adam Smearman place third in the 200 IM (1:56.61), Kyle Wamelink fourth in the 200 IM (1:57.96), Adley Kilgore second in the 50 free (20.90) and Chris Jones fourth in the 50 free (21.44).
Friday is a big day at the PSAC’s with seven events taking place in both championships. Friday’s events include the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke and the 800 Free Relay. The prelims begin at 10am, with the finals starting Friday night at 6pm. Tickets are available at the door.
