PSAC Swimming Championship
WEST CHESTER JUMPS TO EARLY LEAD
(Clarion, Pa.): West Chester’s Men’s and Women’s teams have the early lead after one event of the 48th Men and the 31st Women’s PSAC Swimming Championships hosted at Clarion University.
Starting Wednesday Feb. 15th and concluding Saturday, February 18th, the PSAC Championship will total 19 events each for both the women’s and men’s championships.
After one event West Chester leads with 55 points, Clarion is right behind with 38 points, Bloomsburg is third with 33, Shippensburg fourth with 29, IUP fifth with 24, California sixth at 18, Edinboro seventh with 13 and Slippery Rock eighth with 9. the women’s championship has 13 teams.
The men’s title has eight squads and defending champion West Chester leads after one event with 34 points, Shippensburg is second with 19, IUP third at 16, Clarion fourth with 10, Bloomsburg fifth with 7, Edinboro sixth with 4 and Kutztown seventh at 3 points.
In the only women’s final of the night, West Chester’s Eszter Balazs won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:31.30, with Bloom’s Ashley Yelinek second at 10:32.35. Clarion had Sarah Besecker fourth (10:38.89), teammates Stevie Coble ninth, Stacy Humienny 15th and Morgan Berkowitz 17th.
On the men’s side Shippensburg’s Mike Owen won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:37.11, with West Chester’s Cody Clauser second (9:39.23) and Chris Salomone third at 9:40.00. Clarion’s Mike Chesterfield was fifth with a time of 9:58.
There will be five events on Thursday including the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 medley relay. The prelims begin at 10am, with the finals starting Thursday night at 6pm. Tickets are available at the door.
