Clarion Women Stun West Chester 200-170/Men Lose To Rams by 5 Points
(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion’s
Women’s Swimming and Diving team stunned West Chester on Saturday at Tippin
Natatorium, defeating the defending PSAC champion Rams 200-170. Clarion also
rattled IUP by a whopping 306-59 margin. The women upped their dual meet record
to 9-1.
The men’s team also had a fine
performance, downing IUP 302-67, and narrowly lost to defending champ West
Chester 187-182. The men currently stand at 5-4.
Leading the women’s team on to
victory were swimmers Lori Leitzinger and Kristy Clarke, along with diver Jamie
Wolf. Leitzinger won the 100 backstroke (1:00.19) and Clarke the 100 freestyle
(55.06). Wolf won both the 1 meter (666.75) and 3 meter (814.88) competitions.
Also contributing heavily were three
winning relays including the 200, 400 and 800 free relays. Clarke and Brittany
Hanzl were on all three, Sari Cattoni and Stacy Ogden on two each. Leitzinger
and Brehan Heebner one each.
Heebner meanwhile was second in the 100 and 200 butterfly, Cattoni second in the
100 breaststroke and 200 IM, and Leitzinger second in the 50 free and the 200
backstroke. Diver Teagan Riggs was second on one and three meter boards.
Winners for the men included Chris
Jones, Kyle Wamelink and Adam Smearman in the pool, while divers Zack Saeger and
Kevan Phillips also topped events.
Jones won the 100 backstroke (53.49),
Wamelink the 200 IM (1:59.70) and Smearman the 200 butterfly (1:58.54).
Saeger was first in 1 meter diving with 643.73 and Phillips took 3 meter with
704.70.
The men won four relays including the
200 medley and the 200, 400 and 800 free relays. Jones was part of all three
free relay wins, giving him four firsts on the day. Adley Kilgore was on 3
winning relays, while Mike Cohen, Smearman and Wamelink won two each. On one
winning relay were Mike Kerr, James Rankin, Kevin McCracken and Brett Robbins.
Mike Chesterfiled also finished second individually in three races including the
400 IM, 500 free and 1650 free races.
Clarion is at Pitt next Saturday. The
PSAC’s will be hosted by Clarion from Feb. 15-18.
