Clarion’s Sherry Named PSAC-West Player of the Week

Freshman was PSAC-West Rookie of the Week last week

LOCK HAVEN – Clarion University freshman shooting guard Mike Sherry (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) is the PSAC-West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

It is the second consecutive week Sherry has been honored by the PSAC, he was PSAC-West Rookie of the Week last week, and the fourth time this year he has earned either Player of the Week or Rookie of the Week honors in the PSAC-West.

Sherry averaged 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game last week while shooting 71.4 percent (15 of 21) from the floor including 68.8 percent (11 of 16) from three-point range. He led the Golden Eagles (10-8 overall, 2-2 PSAC-West) to a 2-0 week with wins over Lock Haven (69-60) and Shippensburg (89-80).

He had a career day Saturday in the win over Shippensburg scoring 30 points on 11 of 13 shooting while dishing out seven assists and grabbing five rebounds. He also shot 8 of 10 from beyond the 3-point arc tying the school record for three-point shooting percentage in a game when taking at least 10.

Sherry also had a solid game in the victory over Lock Haven Wednesday scoring 13 points while adding seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

On the season, Sherry is Clarion’s leading scorer at 13.0 ppg while adding 2.6 rpg and 31 assists. His 48 3-pointers lead the team, and his 44.0 percent shooting mark from beyond 3-point range is the fourth-best in the PSAC.

Sherry’s 221 career points are the most by a freshman at Clarion since 2003 when Terrance Vaughns scored 301 and Shamar Green 248.

NOTES – Sherry’s 80 percent mark from 3-point range ties the school record held by three different players (Kwame Morton 8 of 10 in 1991 vs. Slippery Rock; Lormont Sharp 8 of 10 in 1999 vs. Longwood; Steve Serwatka 8 of 10 vs, Lock Haven in 2001) … Sherry’s 30 points vs. Shippensburg marked the first time a Golden Eagle scored 30 in a game since Feb. 18, 2007, when Terrance Vaughns had 30 vs. California … Sherry has three PSAC-West Rookie of the Week awards this year as well.
