EDINBORO’S THREE’S KEEP CLARION FROM CLINCHING PSAC PLAYOFF SPOT

EDINBORO – Edinboro couldn’t miss from three-point land, and consequently Clarion will have to wait until this weekend to see if it will be playing in the PSAC Playoffs.

The Fighting Scots (18-8 overall, 8-3 PSAC-West) connected on 11 of 18 three-pointers (61.1 percent) on their way to an 81-58 win over Clarion (12-14, 5-6) Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse in Edinboro.

While the loss assures Clarion of its first losing regular season since going 12-13 in 1996, the Golden Eagles can still clinch a PSAC Playoff berth by beating Slippery Rock at home Sunday (3 p.m.) or if Lock Haven loses at home Saturday to IUP. Clarion has been to the PSAC Playoffs in nine of the past 10 years missing them for the first time since 1996 last season.

Clarion trailed by a single point – 15-14 – with 8:02 left in the first half before Edinboro closed the half on a 22-6 run to take a 37-20 lead and never looked back getting the lead into the 20’s early in the second half and allowing Clarion to never get any closer than the 15 the entire second half.

Josh Yanke had a solid game for the Golden Eagle scoring 17 points and hauling in five rebounds while shooting 7 of 16. Frank Torbert also gave Clarion a lift off the bench scoring 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting, and David Blanks from nearby Erie connected on 3 of 4 three-pointers in the final five minutes of the contest for nine points. Bobby Franklin had seven assists and just one turnover at the point.

Devon Knight paced Edinboro with 19 points including 3-for-3 from three-point land. Joseph Jones went 5 of 8 from downtown and scored 17 points, while Daren Tielsch had 15 points and eight boards and Curtis Ingram 12 points and seven rebounds.

Clarion’s game on Sunday with Slippery Rock is Senior Day with the Golden Eagles honoring Torbert, Franklin, Chris Buchanan, Brent Nelson, Justin Collins and Leon Kennedy. The game can be heard locally on 91.7 FM and on the Internet at www.redzonemedia.com
