SHIPPENSBURG PULLS AWAY FROM CLARION IN SECOND HALF FOR 64-49 VICTORY

SHIPPENSBURG – Shippensburg used runs of 10-0 and 7-2 in the second half to get a 64-49 win over visiting Clarion in PSAC-West action Saturday afternoon.

The loss is the ninth straight for the Golden Eagles, who fall to 5-11 overall and 0-3 in the PSAC-West. Shippensburg improves to 11-10 overall and 2-1 in the West.

The game was tied at 29 at halftime, but Shippensburg scored the first 10 points of the second half while holding Clarion without a field goal for the first 8:13 of the half. That helped the Red Raiders take a 41-31 lead with 13:47 to play.

The Golden Eagles fought back going on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 41-38 on a free throw by Brent Nelson with 9:18 to play.

Clarion was still within two possessions – 42-38 – with 8:33 left and had a couple of chances to cut the game to one possession. But Lonnell Jones missed a three-pointer. After Shippensburg missed a shot, Clarion called a 30-second time-out with 7:31 to go. But the Golden Eagles couldn’t finish with Leon Kennedy missing a shot that Nelson rebounded. But Clarion then turned the ball over, and Shippensburg answered with a 7-2 run to go ahead 49-40 with 5:14 to play. Clarion never recovered, and Ship pulled away for the 15-point lead.

Shippensburg started the game by scoring 12 of the first 16 points before a couple of three-pointers by Justin Collins helped Clarion get the game tied at 14. The game then remained tight throughout the first half and ended in a 29-29 tie.

Shippensburg had four players in double digits led by 19 points from Chuck Davis. Jamal Williams, Alex Jones and Todd Johnson each scored 10 points for the Red Raiders.

Clarion got 10 points from Leon Kennedy and Justin Collins, while Lonnell Jones and Josh Yanke each had nine points.

Shippensburg had a big advantage on the offensive glass getting 14 offensive rebounds compared to Clarion’s eight. Clarion also turned the ball over 19 times.
