KUTZTOWN USES SECOND HALF RUN TO BEAT EAGLES

CLARION – Kutztown used a 10-0 second-half run to beat Clarion 79-69 Sunday afternoon at Clarion’s Tippin Gym.

The loss is the fourth in a row for Clarion (5-6) as it readies for its PSAC-West opener at 8 p.m. Wednesday with California.

The Golden Eagles had used a 13-3 run in the second half to build a 51-48 lead with 14:08 left in the game thanks to two Leon Kennedy free throws.

Clarion still held a 3-point advantage – 53-50 – after a Lamar Richburg jumper with 13:39 left.

But the Golden Eagles didn’t score another point until the 10:00 mark. In the meantime, Kutztown went on the 10-0 run to build a 60-53 lead.

Clarion twice got the deficit to five points – the last time being at 62-57 – with 8:52 to play. But the Golden Bears went on a 10-4 run to get the lead back to double digits with just under four minutes to play.

Kutztown led by 12 late in the first half only to watch Clarion cut the lead to six – 42-36 – at halftime. The Golden Eagles then climb to within a point early in the second half before Kutztown went back up by seven – 45-38 – right before Clarion’s 13-3 run.

Leon Kennedy led Clarion with a game-high 24 points, while Josh Yanke added 12 points and six rebounds. Chris Buchanan chipped in with seven points and nine boards, while Demetrius Graham had nine points and three assists off the bench.

Dave Ben paced Kutztown with 22 points while Stephen Dennis added 17 points and 10 rebounds
