EAST STROUDSBURG KNOCKS OFF CLARION IN OVERTIM
CLARION – Andy Heimbach’s three-pointer with six seconds left forced overtime and East Stroudsburg outscored Clarion 13-8 in the extra session to get an 83-78 win Saturday afternoon at Clarion’s Tippin Gym.
Clarion (5-5) trailed 65-56 with 3:51 to play but went on a 13-0 run to take a 69-65 lead after a free throw by Demetrius Graham with 26.5 seconds left.
But Graham missed the second end of the 2-shot foul and moments later Leon Kennedy was only able to hit one of two free throws leaving Clarion ahead 70-67 with 17.2 left in regulation. Heimback then got the ball in the near corner and despite fumbling it a little bit was able to nail an off-balance three-pointer to tie the game.
Clarion had a chance to final at the buzzer, but Leon Kennedy’s three from the far corner was off sending the game to overtime.
The Golden Eagles took an early 72-70 lead in the extra session on two free throws from Chris Buchanan. Clarion then led 74-72 following two Bobby Franklin charity shots 1:30 into overtime.
East Stroudsburg (9-2), though, answered with a 7-0 run fueled by two baskets from Ronald Louis to go ahead 79-74 with 28.5 seconds left.
Clarion wasn’t quite done twice cutting the lead to three points in the next 10 seconds the final time being on a Graham lay-up with 19.8 left.
East Stroudsburg had the early advantage building a 38-26 lead with 2:47 left in the first half before Clarion cut the lead to 40-34 at halftime.
Clarion came out of the lockerroom on fire going on a 12-2 run to take a 46-42 lead thanks to Frank Torbert’s three-pointer just over four minutes into the second half.
East Stroudsburg answered back to tie the game at 47, and later in the half the Warriors went on a 12-4 run to get the lead up the nine points.
Josh Yanke led Clarion with 18 points and 14 rebound while Kennedy added 18 points. Franklin had 12 points and nine assists, while Lamar Richburg contributed 11 points off the bench.
Channon Easley had 18 points and 13 rebounds for East Stroudsburg despite playing just 27 minutes because of foul trouble. Easley fouled out of the game in regulation. Josh Wentz chipped in with 15 points, while Graves had 11.
Clarion returns to action Sunday when it hosts Kutztown at 3 p.m.
