CLARION WINS 3RD PSAC-WEST TITLE SINCE 1997

Clarion clinched its third PSAC-West title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PSAC Playoffs with the 69-61 win at Edinboro Wednesday, Clarion’s first regular-season win in Edinboro since 1991 … It is the Golden Eagles third PSAC-West title since 1997 (1997, 2000, 2003), and Clarion also won the PSAC Title in 2001.

EAGLES COULD HOST ONE OF THREE TEAMS IN PSAC’S

The Golden Eagles will host one of three teams in the first round of the PSAC Playoffs at 8 p.m. Tuesday … If Clarion beats IUP tonight, the Golden Eagles will entertain the Indians … If IUP wins tonight, then Clarion will face the loser of this afternoon’s contest between Edinboro and Shippensburg at Shippensburg … Clarion is 1-0 vs. IUP this season, 2-0 vs. Edinboro and 1-1 vs. Shippensburg … It will be Clarion’s first home playoff game since 2000 when the Golden Eagles lost to Slippery Rock 73-54.

CHURCH STEPPING IT UP

Senior point guard Lee Church has been stepping up his play in recent games for the Golden Eagles … He is averaging 8.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 4.9 apg and 2.6 spg in Clarion’s last eight games while helping the Golden Eagles to a 7-1 mark during the stretch … He scored a career-high 25 points Wednesday at Edinboro after posting a then career-high 13 points Feb. 16 vs. Slippery Rock … He also had a career-high 11 assists in the Slippery Rock win and has had five or more assists in six games this season.

CLARION; IUP REGIONALLY RANKED

Clarion and IUP are both regionally ranked … The Golden Eagles are 10th in the East Region, while IUP is 8th.

 

RECENT CLARION-IUP HISTORY

Clarion has won 5 of the last 7 meetings between the schools and 8 of the last 13 …Clarion beat the Indians 82-78 in double overtime Feb. 5 at Tippin Gym … The game was tied 68 at the end of regulation and 76 at the end of the first overtime …  IUP snapped a 3-game losing streak last year when Mike Mangel hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left to rally the Indians from a 10-point deficit with 4:16 to play for a 67-65 win at Clarion  … The Eagles won 100-83 win at IUP last year thanks in part to shooting a  team record 70% from 3-point range (14 of 20) … The teams have met twice in the PSAC Playoffs since 2001 with Clarion winning 79-73 at IUP in 2001 on the way to the PSAC Title and IUP winning 62-55 at IUP in 2002 on its way to the PSAC title.
