Clarion University senior forward Ryan Wells (Library/South Park) is the PSAC-West men’s basketball co-Player of the Week after helping the Golden Eagles to wins over Kutztown and West Chester over the weekend. Wells averaged 21.0 points and 14.5 rebounds per game in the two victories. He had 18 points and 19 rebounds in a 69-63 win over Kutztown Saturday and 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 72-61 win over West Chester Saturday. The 19 rebounds tied for the most by a Golden Eagle since Chris Roosevelt had 20 Feb. 23, 1983, against Mercyhurst. The last Clarion player to have 19 rebounds was Marvin Wells Nov. 25, 1997, against Mansfield. Wells shot 50 percent (13 of 26) from the field and 81.3 percent (13 of 16) from the free-throw line during the week. On the year, the 6-2 Wells is averaging 15.7 ppg and 8.6 rpg while helping the Golden Eagles to a 9-3 start. He is the ninth leading scorer in the PSAC and the sixth leading rebounder despite playing against players four or five inches taller than him on a nightly basis. Clarion returns to action Wednesday at Shippensburg in the PSAC-West opener for both squads. Wells is the son of Clarion Hall of Fame basketball player Reggie Wells Sr., and Clarion graduate Diane Wells. His brother, Reggie Jr., was standout offensive lineman for the Clarion University football team and was the starting guard for the Arizona Cardinals this past season. Wells shared the award with Edinboro’s Jakim Donaldson. |
