CLARION’S SMITH REPEATS AS PSAC-WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

GOLDEN EAGLE’S GREEN NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Clarion University’s men’s basketball team had both the PSAC-West Co-Player of the Week and the PSAC-West Rookie of the Week for the week that ended with games through Jan. 18.

The Golden Eagles (12-3 overall, 1-0 PSAC-West) Rollie Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Joseph’s) was named PSAC-West Co-Player of the Week, the second week in a row he has garnered the Player of the Week award and the third time this season he has taken home the award. Clarion’s Shamar Green (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavierian) was chosen as the PSAC-West Rookie of the Week, the second time this season he has won the award.

Smith had one of the best weeks of his stellar four-year career for Clarion averaging 32.5 ppg on 18 of 34 (52.9 percent) shooting in a 2-0 week for the Golden Eagles. He also canned 12 of 21 (57.1 percent) of his three-pointers and 17 of 20 (85 percent) of his free throws during the week. He scored a career-high 38 points in a 90-72 win over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday with 26 of the points coming in the final 13:44 of the game. This was just three days after he led the Golden Eagles to a league opening 79-72 win over California Wednesday by scoring 27 points.

"Rollie really stepped his play up this week," Clarion head coach Dr. Ron Righter said. "That is what great players do."

Green put in two gutsy performances during the week as well. Playing despite having dislocated a finger on his shooting hand Jan. 11 and missing the Golden Eagles Jan. 12 game, Green averaged 14.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg in helping Clarion to the 2-0 week. He connected on 10 of 19 (52.6 percent) of his shots and accounted for 20 points and seven rebounds off the bench in the win over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday.

"Shamar played well this week, especially considering we weren’t even sure if he was going to play Wednesday when the week started," Righter said. "He is a very talented player, and we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg right now."

Smith is Clarion’s leading scorer averaging a PSAC-West leading 21.7 ppg to go along with 3.93 apg, which is third in the PSAC-West. Smith, a point guard in his first three season, is playing the point, shooting guard and small forward this season and is averaging 5.2 rpg, third on the team, and 1.5 spg.

Green, a true freshman, is third on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg) and second in rebounds (6.2 rpg). He is sixth in the PSAC-West in rebounding.
