SMITH NAMED PSAC-WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Clarion University senior Rollie Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Joseph’s) is the PSAC-West men’s basketball player of the week for games through Sunday, Jan. 12.

Smith helped the Golden Eagles to a 1-1 week by averaging 21.5 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 5.0 apg. He tied a career high with 28 points while adding nine rebounds and three assists in an 84-79 overtime loss at Cheyney Saturday. Smith then came back to record his first career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to go with seven assists in a 64-61 win over Kutztown Sunday.

Behind Smith team-leading and PSAC-West leading 20.1 ppg, Clarion is off to a 10-3 start. Smith is also averaging 5.4 rpg, 4.2 apg and 1.4 spg. In the win over Kutztown he became just the sixth player in school history to dish out 400 or more career assists (405) and only the third player in school history to have at least 1,000 career points (1,167) and 400 career assists. Smith is eight assists shy of tying Elmer Kreiling for fifth in school history with 413.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES: Clarion starts PSAC-West play 8 p.m. Wednesday at California … The Golden Eagles return home Saturday to host Pitt-Johnstown at 7 p.m. and will play its first PSAC-West home game Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. against Slippery Rock … The other two players in Clarion history with 1,000 career points and 400 career assists are Oronn Brown (1,442 points, 631 assists) and Carl Grinage (1,378 points, 534 assists).
