Clarion University senior guard Rollie Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Joseph’s) became the 24th player in school history to go over the 1,000-point mark when he scored 11 points in Clarion’s 71-62 loss to West Chester Friday.

With 27 points in a 75-73 setback to Millersville Saturday, Smith now has 1,028 points ranking him 24th in school history. He is 70 points shy of breaking into the top 20.

A four-year starter for the Golden Eagles, Smith is also just 30 assists shy of 400 in his career and would be only the sixth Golden Eagles with 400 career assists. He would also only be the third Eagle with at least 1,000 career points and 400 career assists. The other two are Oronn Brown (1993-97 – 1,442 points, 631 assists) and Carl Grinage (1973-77 – 1,378 points, 534 assists),

A four-year starter, Smith scored 244 his freshman season (1999-00 – 9.0 ppg), 330 his sophomore year (2000-01 – 11.4 ppg) and 332 his junior campaign (2001-02 – 12.8 ppg). He has 122 points (20.3 ppg) this year.

In Smith’s three-plus seasons, Clarion has a record of 58-30 (65.9%) including a 4-2 start this year.

With Smith at the point for most of the last three seasons, the Golden Eagles won the PSAC title in 2000-01 advancing to the NCAA playoffs and the PSAC-West title in 1999-00. Clarion has also qualified for the PSAC Playoffs in each of Smith’s three seasons. When he reached 1,000 career points, he joined former teammates David Shearer (1,248), Allen Stevens (1,192) and Steve Serwatka (1,041) as members of the 1,000-point club.
