GOLDEN EAGLES SMITH 10 POINT FROM 1,000

Clarion University senior guard Rollie Smith is 10 points shy of 1,000 career points heading into Clarion’s 8 p.m. game Friday against West Chester in Tippin Gym.

Smith, who leads the Golden Eagles with 84 points (21.0 ppg) this season, has 990 in his career. With 10 more points he will become the 24th player in school history to gain 1,000 career points

Smith is also only 35 assists shy of 400 in his career. He would be just the sixth Golden Eagle with 400 career assists, and he would be only the third Eagle with at least 1,000 career points and 400 career assists. The other two are Oronn Brown (1993-97 –1,442 points,631 assists) and Carl Grinage (1973-77 – 1,378 points, 534 assists),

A four-year starter, Smith scored 244 his freshman season (1999-00 – 9.0 ppg), 330 his sophomore year (2000-01 – 11.4 ppg) and 332 his junior campaign (2001-02 – 12.8 ppg).

In Smith’s three-plus seasons, Clarion has a record of 58-28 (67.4%) including a 4-0 start this year, the school’s best since a 10-0 start to the 1991-92 season. With Smith at the point for most of the last three seasons, the Golden Eagles won the PSAC title in 2000-01 advancing to the NCAA playoffs and the PSAC-West title in 1999-00. Clarion has also qualified for the PSAC Playoffs in each of Smith’s three seasons. When he reaches 1,000 career points, he will join former teammates David Shearer (1,248), Allen Stevens (1,192) and Steve Serwatka (1,041) as members of the 1,000-point club.
