SHIPPENSBURG RALLIES PAST CLARION 35-10
(SHIPPENSBURG, PA): First year Clarion head coach Jay Foster pulled out all the stops on Saturday trying to get his Golden Eagles a win to end the season on a high note.
Clarion controlled the first half outgaining Shippensburg 130-52 and took a 3-0 lead to the locker room at halftime.
But Shippensburg rallied for 35 second half points, 21 in the third quarter, and the Red Raiders fought back for a 35-10 win over Clarion in the season finale for both squads.
Played at Seth Grove Stadium, Clarion finished its season with a 1-10 overall record and an 0-6 mark in the PSAC-West. Shippensburg meanwhile ended with a 5-6 overall mark and a 3-3 record in the PSAC-West.
Clarion played a very strong first half and owned field position most of the first 30minutes of the game.
After stalling their first drive at the Ship 33, Clarion set up shop at the Raider 23 following a nifty 24-yard punt return by Clarion safety Erik Yonish to the Shippensburg 23. A 10-yard Eddie Emanuel run put the Eagles in business at the Raider 13. But on third and 4 at the 7, Clarion pitched to wide receiver Pierre Odom on a reverse and the Raiders stopped the play for a 7-yard loss. Senior placekicker Kyle Snoke came on and booted a 31-yard field goal to give Clarion a 3-0 with 2:58 left in the first.
In the second quarter Clarion had several opportunities to expand their lead, but consecutive drives stalled at the Ship 39 and 36.
In the second half Clarion’s Tom Schreppel intercepted a Tony Gomez pass at the Golden Eagle 5 to stop the initial Raider drive of the second half. But the Raiders scored the next three times they got the pigskin to jump out to a 21-3 lead.
Aaron Dykes scored on a 3-yard run with 6:43 left in the third, then Pat Ferguson caught a 45-yard pass from Gabe Maiocco with 4:34 left in the third, and Dave Richards capped the third quarter with a 22-yard td run with 1:38 left in the third and Shippensburg had a 21-3 third quarter advantage.
Clarion linebacker Josh Rytel intercepted Maiocco at the Raider 33 giving the Golden Eagles good field position. The Eagles scored 6 plays later when freshman quarterback Tyler Huether scored from 7-yards out on on a quarterback draw to bring the game to within 21-10 with 7:10 remaining.
Shippensburg added two late scores to post a 35-10 victory.
