LOCK HAVEN DEFEATS CLARION 14-7

 

            (LOCK HAVEN, PA): Lock Haven jumped out to a 14-0 lead, then held on to defeat Clarion in a PSAC-West game today 14-7.

            Held at Lock Haven’s Hubert Jack Stadium, Clarion dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the PSAC-West, while Lock Haven upped their mark to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the PSAC-West.

            Clarion outgained Lock Haven 281-186 and had 17 first downs to Lock Haven’s 10, but turnovers hurt the Golden Eagles who lost three fumbles and an interception. Clarion also featured a fine performance from tailback Eddie Emanuel, who ran 23 times for 122 yards.

            A second quarter Clarion turnover set the table for Lock Haven. The Golden Eagles were set to field a punt at their own 40, but a short punt hit Ryan Hart on the bounce and Lock Haven’s Jason Eby recovered at the Golden Eagle 40.

            The Bald Eagles went 40 yards in 6 plays and took a 7-0 lead when Chris Hawkins found paydirt on a 20-yard run with 2:52 to go before intermission.

            Lock Haven scored on its first possession of the second half when qb ilio DiPaolo tossed a 44-yard td pass to Rafael Smith, who caught the ball at the 1 and fell into the endzone. The PAT was good and LH led 14-0 with 13:00 left in the third quarter.

            Clarion took its next drive from the Clarion 11 to the LH 35, but turned the ball over on downs.

            After losing a fumble at its own 45 early in the fourth quarter, Clarion got the pigskin back with 8:35 to go in the game and drove 70-yards in 6 plays to score. The td pass came on a 32-yard strike from qb Tyler Huether (Penn Trafford) to wideout Pierre Odom, who made a diving grab in the endzone. The PAT by Kyle Snoke was good and Clarion cut the lead to 14-7 with 6:52 remaining in the game.

            After the Clarion defense held, the Golden Eagles fumbled the punt and Lock Haven recovered at the Clarion 28. Again the defense held, but Lock Haven punted the Golden Eagles down to the 9 yard line with 3:26 remaining.

            Clarion got two first downs, but the drive stalled at the Clarion 34 and when the Golden Eagles turned the ball over on downs, Lock Haven ran out the clock.

            Clarion qb Tyler Huther completed 10 of 26 passes for 137 yards and 1 td. Emanuel ran for 122 yards, plus caught 1 pass for 5 yards, and Pierre Odom grabbed 5 aerials for 75 yards and 1 td.

            Lock Haven saw Chris Hawkins run for 59 yards and 1 td on 19 carries, while qb Ilio DiPaola completed 7 of 17 for 115 yards and 1 td.

            Jimmy Simmons led the Clarion defense with 8 tackles and 3 tfl’s, while Zach Gourley notched 9 hits and 2 tfl’s and Kevin Rigby with 9 stops and 1 tfl.

            Clarion returns home to host California next Saturday in a 1pm game. Lock Haven hosts Kutztown.
