EDINBORO DEFEATS CLARION 13-0
(CLARION, PA): Edinboro tailback Houston Brown ran for 157 yards and 1 touchdown as the Fighting Scots edged Clarion 13-0 on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the PSAC-West, while Edinboro upped its overall mark to 4-4 and is now 1-2 in the PSAC-West.
Brown, a starting cornerback until this week, was switched to tailback and rushed 34 times for 157 yards and 1 td to lead the Scots
Both teams missed field goal attempts in the first quarter. Edinboro’s Kody Robertson missed from 39, then Clarion got the ball and had a chance of its own.
The Golden Eagles drove from their own 22 to the Edinboro 25 in 12 plays. Kyle Snoke came on and tried a 42-yarder, but the kick just sailed right of the upright and the score stayed tied at 0-0 with 1:38 left in the first.
Brown opened the scoring in the second quarter as Edinboro capitalized on recovering a Clarion fumble at the Golden Eagle 9. Clarion qb Tyler Huether pitched the pigskin toward Keith Gruber at the Clarion 12, but the running back couldn’t handle it and Edinboro pounced on the pigskin for a key turnover.
On second down Brown darted off left tackle and into the endzone for the game’s only touchdown. The PAT was good and Edinboro led 7-0 with 13:05 left in the second quarter.
Edinboro’s Kody Robertson kicked a 31-yard field goal with 3:46 left in the second and a 24-yard field goal with 8:11 left in the third to round out the scoring.
Clarion had a third quarter drive stall at the Edinboro 30, then in the fourth quarter the Eagles had a great opportunity to score. Freshman qb Tyler Huether (Penn Trafford) completed 35-yard pass to Pierrre Odom to the Boro 18. On fourth down, Huether’s pass in the endzone was intercepted by Tom Davidson with only 6:18 left in the game and the eagles could get no closer.
Clarion had 167 yards of offense including 48 rushing and 119 passing. Huether completed 9 of 26 for 119 yards, plus rushed 16 times for 13 yards. Odom grabbed 5 passes for 85 yards.
Edinboro meanwhile had 286 yards of offense including 168 rushing and 118 passing. QB Trevor Harris completed 11 of 21 passes for 118 yards, with 6 catches made by Ryan Valasek for 79 yards.
Both defenses played very strong games. Clarion was led by linebacker Matt Morris who had 15 stops, and tackle Jimmy Simmons who had 10 hits and 5 tfl’s.
Edinboro was led by Ben Stroup with 9 tackles and 3 tfl’s.
Clarion travels to Lock Haven for a 1pm start next Saturday, while Edinboro travels to Slippery Rock.
