#10 BLOOMSBURG RALLIES PAST CLARION 24-10
(Bloomsburg, Pa.): Clarion jumped out to a 10-0 second quarter lead and led 10-7 at halftime, but #10 ranked Bloomsburg rallied to take a 17-10 lead late in the third quarter on a 15-yard run from Jamar Brittingham, and held on late to defeat the stubborn Golden Eagles 24-10.
Held at Bloomsburg’s Redman Stadium, the Huskies, ranked #10 in this week’s AFCA Poll, raised their record to 3-1, while Clarion dropped to 0-4.
Clarion took a 3-0 lead in the second quarter when senior placekicker Kyle Snoke (Erie – Cathedral Prep) booted a 35-yard field goal with 8:30 on the clock. The drive went 70 yards in 13 plays.
Later in the second Clarion got a big turnover when linebacker Kevin Rigby intercepted a Dan Latore pass at the 50 and returned the pigskin 16 yards to the Bloom 34. After an 18 yard pass from freshman qb Mark Rupert (Knoch HS) to Pierre Odom, Rupert tossed a 17-yard td pass to tight end Matt Foradora (Brockway) and Clarion led 10-0 with only 4:44 left before intermission.
Bloomsburg came right back and went 70-yards in 6 plays to score. QB Latorre fired a 25-yard td pass to Greg Masters on a post route to close the gap to 10-7 with 1:16 left in the second quarter.
Bloomsburg tied the score 10-10 on a Jon Koenig 25-yard field goal with 4:10 left in the third, then Bloomsburg special teams made the big play.
On Clarion’s next possession, and with punter Nick Perla in punt formation, Bloomsburg’s rush forced Perla to run right to try and get the punt off, but instead was tackled at the Golden Eagle 15 yard line, giving the Huskies a “golden” opportunity to take the lead.
Bloomsburg wasted little time, giving the handoff on the first play to All-america running back Jamar Brittingham, and he broke several tackles to scamper 15-yards into the endzone. The PAT gave Bloomsburg its first lead of the day at 17-10 with only 58-seconds remaining in the third.
Clarion drove to the Bloomsburg 16 on its next possession, but the 23-yard field goal try was blocked at the line of scrimmage turning the Eagles away.
Bloosmburg then drove 80 yards in 14 plays to take a 24-10 lead. Brittingham again bulled over from the one yard line and the Huskies led by 14 with 3:48 to play.
Clarion drove again deep into Bloomsburg territory, getting to the Husky 24, but couldn’t get any closer as the Huskies held on for a 24-10 win.
Clarion qb Mark Rupert completed 11 of 20 aerials for 132 yards and 1 td. Running back Eddie Emanuel rushed 17 times for 81 yards, and receiver Herb Carraway grabbed 3 passes for 71 yards.
Clarion’s defense was led by Zach Gourley who had 6 tackles and 1 tfl, plus interceptions by Erik Yonish, Quintyn Brazil and Kevin Rigby.
Bloomsburg qb Dan Latorre completed 9 of 13 passes for 168 yards, while Jamar Brittingham rushed 23 times for 160 yards and 2 td’s.
Clarion returns home to open PSAC-West play on September 30th when the Golden Eagles host Slippery Rock at 6pm.
Bloomsburg goes to Shippensburg next week.
