CLARION 7TH AFTER 36 HOLES OF EAST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
(Wheeling, W.V.): Top seeded Charleston holds a two-stroke lead over Fairmont State and a three shot lead over IUP after two rounds of the 2007 NCAA Division II East Region Golf Championship held at the Speidel Jones Course at Oglebay Resort. The teams have completed 36 holes of the 54-hole championship which will conclude on Wednesday. Par both days was 71.
Charleston leads the team scoring with a 33 over par total of 601 (301,300), with Fairmont State in second place at 603 (309, 294) and IUP third with a 604 (313, 291). Millersville dropped back to fourth with a 606 (302, 304), Ohio Valley is fifth at 609 (306, 303), Concord sixth with a 614 (311, 303), Clarion seventh at 623 (315, 308) and West Liberty eighth with a 624 (314, 310).
Clarion’s Preston Mullens (Jr. Emporium – Cameron County) is in 17th place in the individual scoring with a two-day total of 152. Mullens fired a two-ver 73 today to go with his 79 on day one. Teammate Justin Moose (Jr. N. Huntingdon – Norwin) is in 18th spot, Justin Scott (Sr. Monroeville – Gateway) is in 32nd place, and Tom Will (Sr. Erie – McDowell) and Justin Cameron (So. Punxsutawney) are in 32nd place.
Moose has a two day total of 153 (78, 75), Scott is in at 159 (79. 80) and Will (79, 83) and Cameron (82, 80) are both posted at 162.
The leading individual golfer is Will Gautreau who is in at 6-over par 148 (78, 70), while five golfers are at 150 and another four at 150, well within reach of medalist honors.
This is Clarion’s sixth straight NCAA Regional appearance. Clarion finished second behind Concord last season.
The team winner on Wednesday automatically qualifies for the NCAA Championships on May 22-25 in Allendale, Michigan. The top individual player, not on the winning team, also qualifies for a spot at the nationals.
