JUSTIN MOOSE & AL LEFEVRE EARN PSAC GOLF HONORS
Clarion University’s Justin Moose (So. North Huntingdon – Norwin) and coach Al Lefevre were honored today by the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) for their contributions in an outstanding 2005-2006 golf season.
Moose, a sophomore, was named the PSAC “Player of the Year” and Lefevre, who finished his seventh year as head coach, was named the PSAC “Coach of the Year”. Also honored was IUP’s Aaron Williams who was named the PSAC “Rookie of the Year”.
Moose, who had a very strong season, was Clarion’s #1 man the entire season. He finished the year with a 75.0 stroke average. He was the PSAC medalist in the Fall 2005 PSAC Championship with a 74-76, 150 at Wrendale Country Club, plus was third at the recently completed NCAA D-II East Regional with a 54-hole total of 225 (77, 72, 76) at the Speidel Golf Club at the Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia. In the Spring season he also fired a 72 at the IUP Invitational, while his low score last Fall was a three-under 69 at W&J where also earned medalist honors at the Southpointe Golf Club.
A Business Management major at Clarion, he is the son of Vicki and Skip Carroll.
“Justin is a very talented golfer who is very deserving of this award,” said Clarion head coach Al Lefevre. “He has worked very hard to continue to improve his game and look forward to his returning for two more years here at Clarion.”
Lefevre, who has completed his seventh year as Clarion’s head coach, earned the PSAC “Coach of the Year” award for the second time. He also won the award in 2002.
Under Lefevre’s leadership, the Golden Eagles have had tremendous success on the links in the last five years. Clarion has made five straight trips to the NCAA Division II East Regional (2006, 05, 04, 03, 02), and improved their regional finishes over that time. The Golden Eagles finished second at the recently completed East Regional for 2006, plus finished third in 2005, 5th in 2004 and 8th in 2003 and 2002.
Clarion has also been strong at the PSAC’s, winning the PSAC title this season in the Fall of 2005, along with a team title in the Spring of 2002. Lefevre has also led Clarion to four PSAC runner-up endings in the Fall of 2004, Spring of 2004, 2003 and 2001.
Lefevre is a 1965 Clarion University grad and received his Masters Degree from Clarion in 1971. He was a quarterback on the Golden Eagle football team during three seasons (1961-63) and a starter for two.
Al was the head or assistant golf coach at nearby Brookville High School from 1965-99. He led Brookville High School’s golf team to Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference titles in 1986, 87 and 97.
A speech therapist for Riverview Intermediate Unit 6 from 1965-99, he spent 34 years coaching over 70 teams at nearby Brookville Area High School before retiring. As head football coach at Brookville he led his teams to “Little 10" conference titles in 1970 and 1971, while being named “Little 10" Coach of the Year in 1969 and 1970. He was head coach from 1968-82.
A native of Tarentum, Pa. and 1961 graduate of Tarentum High School, Al and wife Bonnie Harkness reside in Brookville. They have two sons Scott and Douglas.
CLARION NOTES: Clarion’s Matt Guyton won the PSAC “Player of the Year” Award in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and was PSAC “Rookie of the Year” in 2002 … The PSAC Golf awards were started in 1988-89.
