CONCORD TOPS CLARION BY 6 STROKES TO WIN NCAA EAST REGIONAL
(WHEELING, W.V.): Concord won the NCAA Division II East Regional today, besting Clarion by 6 shots (914 – 920) at the Speidel Golf Club, at the Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Concord shot a final day score of 306 and finished with a team score of 914 to take first place, while Clarion fired a 307 for a 54-hole score of 920 and a second place finish. Rounding out the eight team field were third place Charleston (921), fourth place Fairmont State (928), fifth place Ohio Valley (930), sixth place West Liberty (940), seventh place IUP (946) and eighth place West Virginia Wesleyan (954).
In individual scores Concord’s Matt Horn took medalist honors with a final round 73 for a three-day total of three-over par 216. Charleston’s Michael Todd was second at six-over 219 and Clarion’s Justin Moose (So. N. Huntingdon – Norwin) finished third. Moose carded a 76 today to go with his first round 77 and second round 72 for a 54-hole total of 225.
Clarion also had Tom Will (Jr. Erie – McDowell) finish ninth, Justin Scott (Jr. Monroeville – Gateway) was 21st, Zach Szwast (Jr. Johnstown – Conemaugh Valley) was 30th and Preston Mullens (So. Emporium – Cameron County) was 37th.
Will shot a 230 (76, 75, 79), while Scott had a 236 (80, 82, 74), Szwast carded a 241 (82, 74, 85) and Mullens a 245 (90, 77, 78).
The Golden Eagles were Fall 2005 PSAC Champions and won the IUP Invitational and the Allegheny Invitational this Spring. The entire team will return for the 2006-07 campiagn.
Concord will move on and represent the East Region at the NCAA Division II Nationals, which will be held at The Resort at Glade Springs, May 16-19, in Daniels, West Virginia.
CLARION NOTES: Clarion has been to the NCAA Regional 5 straight years… This year’s second place finish is the best since the NCAA has gone to the Regional format… Clarion was third last year, 5th in 2004 and 8th in 2003 and 2002… Clarion is coached by Al Lefevre, who is in his seventh year leading the golf team.
