 Clarion Golfers Win 2005 PSAC Golf Championship

            (Hummelstown, Pa.): Clarion’s Justin Moose took medalist honors and the Golden Eagles won the PSAC team title on Sunday with a two-day total of 604 at Wrendale Country Club, edging IUP who finished second with a 608.

            Rounding out the eight team field were West Chester third with a 612, Millersville fourth at 616, Slippery Rock fifth with a 640, California sixth with a 646, California’s women’s team seventh at 689 and Kutztown’s women’s team eighth at 691.

            Clarion shot a 300 on Sunday, to go with their 304 on Saturday to win the team title. IUP, who held a one stroke lead after day 1 with a 303, shot a 305 on Sunday for their 608 total.

            Moose (So. North Huntingdon - Norwin) fired a six-over par 150 (77-73) in winning the individual medalist honors. After 36-holes he was tied with IUP’s Brian Galica. Moose and Galica went to a playoff to decide the medalist honors and Moose won the playoff on the second hole.

            Also leading the Golden Eagles to the title with All-PSAC honors were Tom Will (Jr. Erie - McDowell) and Charlie Fitzsimmons (Fr. Toronto, Ont.) who placed third with 151 totals. Will had a 76-75, while Fitzsimmons carded rounds of 75-76.

            Finishing fifth overall was Justin Scott (Jr. Monroeville - Gateway) with a 79-73= 152, while Zach Szwast (Jr. Johnstown - Conemaugh Valley) notched a 161 (85-76).

            Clarion had finished second at the PSAC’s the last three years and last won the PSAC title in 2002 with a team score of 605. This is the eighth PSAC Golf Championship won by the Golden Eagles. This was the 50th PSAC Golf Championship.

            CLARION NOTES: Clarion is coached by al Lefevre who is in his seventh year leading the Golden Eagles…. He has led Clarion to 2 PSAC titles… Clarion earned an automatic NCAA Division II Regional berth in the Spring (May) with a win at the PSAC Championships... Prior to 2002 the last PSAC team title in golf came in 1982 under former A.D. and coach Frank Lignelli...That team featured captain Joe Boros who is currently the Head PGA Professional at Treesdale C.C. in Pittsburgh and a 1999 Clarion Sports Hall of Fame Inductee.
