CLARION’S MATT GUYTON NAMED PSAC GOLF "PLAYER OF THE YEAR"
Clarion University golfer Matt Guyton (Jr. DuBois) was named today for the third straight year as the PSAC "Player of the Year" by the a vote of the league’s golf coaches.
Also netting awards were West Chester’s Jared Miller as PSAC "Rookie of the Year" and IUP coach Fred Joseph as the PSAC "Coach of the Year".
The award for Clarion’s Guyton means he has swept the PSAC awards in his first three seasons with the Golden Eagles. As a freshman in 2002 he was named the PSAC Player and Rookie of the Year, while the last two years (2003 & 2004) he has won the PSAC "Player of the Year" honors.
"Matt is a tremendously talented golfer who has also shot extraordinarily consistent low scores throughout his career," praised Clarion fifth year head coach Al Lefevre. "We are happy that Matt has received this honor again and feel he is very deserving of this honor."
In the Spring 2004 season Matt won medalist honors at the IUP Invitational with a one-under par 71, shot a 69, 74, 71 at the Camp LeJeune Invitational and in the Fall he was medalist at the Stonewall Invitational with a 151 total. He also was 6th at the Powerade with a 72, 73, 71 total of 216. He is carrying a 75.0 average for the 2003-04 season.
In 2003 Guyton was named a third team All-American after placing seventh at the NCAA Division II National Championships shooting an even par 288 (72, 73, 71, 72) in Sunriver, Oregon. He was the PSAC medalist (150) last year, and then went on to win the NCAA East Regional shooting a 72, 69, 73 - 214, and winning a playoff to qualify for the D-II Nationals. He also qualified for and competed in the U. S. Amateur hosted at Oakmont Country Club in August of 2003 and won the Burgess-McCormack Collegiate Shootout at Hershey Country Club for the second straight year.
Matt is a 2001 graduate of DuBois Area High School and the son of Jim and Bridget Guyton of DuBois. Matt is an Information Systems major at Clarion.
CLARION NOTES: Clarion placed second at the 2004 PSAC Championships behind IUP ... Guyton and the Golden Eagles are awaiting word on an NCAA Division II Playoff bid to the Super Regional held May 3-5 at Blue Ridge Country Club in Harrisburg... Clarion has placed eighth at the last two Regionals... Clarion was second at the 2003 PSAC’s and won the PSAC title in 2002.
