CLARION NAMES MALE AND FEMALE "ATHLETES OF THE YEAR"

MATT GUYTON & HEATHER CIGICH EARN 2004 HONORS

Clarion University junior golfer Matt Guyton (DuBois) and junior women’s basketball player Heather Cigich (Johnstown - Conemaugh Twp.) were named the Male and Female "Athletes of the Year" by Athletic Director Robert Carlson on April 30th as part of the "Sports Hall of Fame" induction ceremonies.

The event was held at Chandler Dining Hall and the voting was done by the school’s varsity head coaches.

Guyton was recently named the PSAC golf "Player of the Year" for the third straight year. As a freshman in 2002 he was named the PSAC Player and Rookie of the Year, while the last two years (2003 & 2004) he has won the PSAC "Player of the Year" honors.

In the Spring 2004 season Matt helped the Eagles to a 2nd place finish at the PSAC’s and a 5th place finish at the NCAA Div. II East Regional under coach Al Lefevre. He was 25th at Regionals (240) and 14th at PSAC’s (156) . Earlier this year he won medalist honors at the IUP Invitational with a one-under par 71, shot a 69, 74, 71 at the Camp LeJeune Invitational and in the Fall he was medalist at the Stonewall Invitational with a 151 total. He also was 6th at the Powerade with a 72, 73, 71 total of 216. He averaged 75.0 average for the 2003-04 season.

In 2003 Guyton was named a third team All-American after placing seventh at the NCAA Division II National Championships shooting an even par 288 (72, 73, 71, 72) in Sunriver, Oregon. He was the PSAC medalist (150) last year, and then went on to win the NCAA East Regional shooting a 72, 69, 73 - 214, and winning a playoff to qualify for the D-II Nationals. He also qualified for and competed in the U. S. Amateur hosted at Oakmont Country Club in August of 2003 and won the Burgess-McCormack Collegiate Shootout at Hershey Country Club for the second straight year.

Matt is a 2001 graduate of DuBois Area High School and the son of Jim and Bridget Guyton of DuBois. Matt is an Information Systems major at Clarion.

Cigich had an outstanding junior campaign for the Golden Eagles leading the PSAC in both scoring (20.0 ppg) and rebounding (12.1) while ranking 15th in the nation in scoring and third in rebounding. A first team PSAC-West selection, she was a first team All-Region and Kodak HM All-American. A quality all-around player, Cigich ranked 2nd in the PSAC and 41st in the nation in steals (3.1 spg), 4th in the PSAC in blocked shots (1.1 bpg) and 7th in the PSAC in shooting percentage (51.9 percent – 218-420). She also added 2.5 apg and shot 74.8 percent (101-135) from the free-throw line.

Cigich added 21 double-double, three 30-point games, including a season-high 31 points twice – Edinboro Feb. 25 and West Liberty Nov. 23 – while going over 20 points 13 times. She also had one 20-rebound game – 21 vs. IUP Feb. 14 – and seven 15-rebound contests. Her 541 points in 2003-2004 rank fourth all-time in a single-season at Clarion, her 328 rebounds ranks third and her 84 steals rank fourth. Already among the career leaders for the Golden Eagles, Cigich is currently averaging a career double-double with 16.9 ppg and 10.6 rpg. The 16.9 ppg currently stands as the highest career average in school history, while her 1,355 career points are fifth most in school history, her 850 rebounds third highest and her 63 blocks third most.

Clarion was 15-12 overall in 2004 and tied for second in the PSAC-West with a 7-5 mark under coach "Gie" Parsons. An Elementary Education major at Clarion, Heather is the daughter of Loren and Tracy Stahl and Barry Cigich.
