CHARLESTON CLAIMS NCAA D-II EAST REGION GOLF TITLE
CLARION FINISHES 8TH IN TEAM RACE - GUYTON 5TH IN MEDAL PLAY
(WEST LAFAYETTE, OHIO)---The University of Charleston shot the day's low round for a second straight day with a 296 as they held off Indiana (PA) by six shots for the NCAA Division II Men's East Region Golf Title. Charleston will now advance to the NCAA D-II Nationals May 21-24 at the Mission Hills Golf Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.
UC ended the 54-hole event at River Greens Golf Club with a 902 team total. IUP fired a 908 and West Liberty State finished third with a 915. Rounding out the eight team field were fourth place West Virginia Wesleyan at 917, fifth place West Chester at 920, Glenville and Concord tied for sixth with 923 and Clarion in eighth place at 924.
The individual spot in the national tournament was responsible for much of the day's drama as four golfers tied for medalist honors at 220. Charleston's Scott Campbell, Concord's Scott George, IUP's Brian Fajt, and IUP's Sam Verano each recorded the four-over par totals. Campbell did not compete in the playoff since he earned a spot in the nationals by virtue of his team's victory. George rolled in a birdie putt from eight feet out on the first playoff hole to punch his ticket to the nationals. Varano notched the day's low 18 with a 71. George shot an even-par 72 on Wednesday.
Clarion ended in eighth place, but had a solid tournament from each of its five players. The 2002 PSAC Champions were led by freshman Matt Guyton shot a third round 74 to go with 75's on the first two days to post a 54-hole total of 224, good for fifth place. Junior Ryan Peffer’s 76 today, coupled with a 79 and 74 yesterday gave him a 229 total and an 11th place ending. Senior Anthony Tacconelli finished the tournament with a 236 (81, 77, 78) total and tied for 30th, while freshman Lou Jesiolkiewic was 33rd with a 237 (81, 78, 78). Sophomore Matt Biddington finished 36th with a 238 (79, 79, 80) total.
