CLARION’S GUYTON & LEFEVRE RECEIVE PSAC GOLF AWARDS

Freshman golfer Matt Guyton (DuBois) and third year head coach Al Lefevre were honored today by the PSAC coaches. Guyton was named as the PSAC "Player of the Year" and PSAC "Rookie of the Year", while Lefevre was voted the PSAC "Coach of the Year".

Clarion won the PSAC team title last weekend at Hawk Valley Country Club in Denver, Pa. The Golden Eagles won the two-day, 36-hole event with a team score of 605, including a 298 on Saturday and a 307 on Sunday. Millersville was second with 611, IUP and West Chester tied for third with a 616, Slippery Rock fifth with 633 and Kutztown’s women’s team was sixth with a 770.

Guyton earned both awards with an outstanding first season at Clarion. He was second at the PSAC’s with a 75 - 73, 148 total. Overall he has played 19 rounds for the Golden Eagles since September and is carrying a stroke average of 74.6. He shot 70 twice in the Fall (Hal Hansen Inv. - and the Allegheny Invitational), and shot a low round of 73 this Spring on three occasions. He has been Clarion’s top player and one of the top players in the region. He is a Business major at Clarion and is the son of Jim and Bridget Guyton of DuBois.

Lefevre, in his third year as Clarion’s mentor, led Clarion to its first PSAC team victory since 1982. Under his direction the Golden Eagles placed second at the PSAC’s last year and third in 2000. The 2002 team placed second at the IUP and Slippery Rock Invitationals, and third in the Fall at the Allegheny and Robert Morris Invitationals. Under his direction this season, four of his five participants earned all-conference honors.

Lefevre is a 1965 Clarion grad and received his Masters Degree from Clarion in 1971. He played quarterback for the Golden Eagles during three seasons (1961-63) and was a starter for two.

Al was the head or assistant golf coach at nearby Brookville High School from 1965-99. He led Brookville High School’s golf team to Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference titles in 1986, 87 and 97.

A speech therapist for Riverview Intermediate Unit 6 from 1965-99, he spent 34 years coaching over 70 teams at Brookville High before retiring. As head football coach at Brookville he led his teams to "Little 10" conference titles in 1970 and 1971, while being named "Little 10" Coach of the Year in 1969 and 1970. He was head coach from 1968-82.

A native of Tarentum, Pa. and 1961 graduate of Tarentum High School, Al and wife Bonnie Harkness reside in Brookville. They have two sons Scott and Douglas.

CLARION NOTES: The PSAC started the golf awards in 1988-89 and these are the first captured by Clarion representatives... The Golden Eagles are awaiting word on a possible NCAA Division II Regional bid ... That will be played April 29 - May 1... Clarion's lineup is expected to remain the same as the PSAC's if the Eagles receive a bid with Guyton (2nd at PSAC's) along with Ryan Peffer who was third with a 150, Anthony Tacconelli 7th at 153, Lou Jesiolkiewic 10th at 154 and Matt Biddington (160).
