GUYTON FIRES 10-UNDER PAR TO WIN WVIAC REGIONAL INVITATIONAL
CLARION SHOOTS FOUR-UNDER PAR AS A TEAM TO COP TEAM TITLE
Clarion head golf coach Al Lefevre, who is in his fourth year leading the Eagle golf team, will remember the WVIAC Regional Invitational meet for many years to come. The Golden Eagles shot a two-day team total of four-under par (572) and sophomore golfer Matt Guyton fired a two-day total of 10-under par 134 (67-67). Although identifying both results as school records is not possible, they are the lowest scores shot in recent memory and could well be university records.
The Invitational was held on September 30th and October 1 at Canaan Valley Golf Club in Davis, West Virginia. The course has a posted yardage of 6,984 and is a par 72.
Guyton, a sophomore from DuBois, Pa., shot identical 5-under par 67's, led the way for the Golden Eagles. He was the PSAC "Player" and "Rookie" of the Year" in 2002.
Also posting quality scores of two-over par for the Golden Eagles were Lou Jesiolkiewic (So. Pgh- Chartiers Valley - 73, 73 - 146), Ryan Peffer (Sr. Harrisville - Moniteau - 72, 74 - 146) and Paul Garris (Jr. Richmond, Tx. Columbia HS - 74, 72 - 146). Freshman James Simpson (Hubert, N.C. - Swansboro - 77, 74 - 151) contributed a 7-over 151.
In the team race Clarion took the title with a 572 total and identical teams scores of 286 both days. Ohio Valley was second at 580, Concord third with 582, West Virginia Wesleyan and Shepherd fourth at 590 and Davis & Elkins sixth with a 591 total. Fourteens teams played in the event.
"It was an unbelievable performance by the entire team," praised coach Lefevre. "Matt had an incredible two days of golf, but he wasn’t the only one," he continued. "Paul Garris and Ryan Peffer really stepped up their games, while Lou (Jesiolkiewic) came in with another strong, steady performance. We weren’t playing up to our potential in our previous fall tournaments and we talked about it as a team. We knew we needed a top-notch performance and the guys really came through. We should be right back in the top 6 in the region."
