KUTZTOWN TOPPLES CLARION 27-10
(KUTZTOWN, PA.): Kutztown running back Maurice Adams scored two touchdowns in a 42-second span that paced the Golden Bears to a 27-10 victory over visiting Clarion on Saturday night.
Kutztown first year head coach Ray Monica saw his Golden Bears win the season opener at newly renovated University Field, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 0-2 under first year head coach Jay Foster. It was the first night game ever played at University Field, while the “A-Turf” playing surface was also brand new.
Clarion played a strong first half and took a 10-6 lead late in the second quarter when Eagle freshman qb Mark Rupert (Knoch) fired a 25-yard td pass to sophomore Dane Williams (Penn Hills). Rupert hit Williams crossing in the middle of the field near the 5-yard line, and Williams stepped around a Kutztown defender and jogged into the endzone for the score. The td pass capped a 7-play, 80-yard drive with only 5:35 left before intermission.
Kutztown’s special teams then stepped forward took charge of the game. With just under three minutes left in the first half Clarion punter Nick Perla was rushed hard by Justin Gibbs, who nearly blocked the punt, resulting in a 3-yard punt to the Clarion 44. The Bears used 10 plays to find the endzone and retook the lead when Maurice Adams scored on a 2-yard run with only 26-seconds before intermission giving Kutztown a 13-10 advantage.
Adams then stepped center stage and took the second half kickoff at the Golden Bear 15, sprinted up the middle, broke down the left sideline and raced 85-yards for a huge touchdown. The PAT gave Kutztown a 20-10 lead only 16-seconds into the third quarter.
Clarion reached the Kutztown 35, 18 and 29 in the second half, but were unable to come up with any points.
The Bears added a 21-yard td pass from Kyle Spotts to Elfren Quiles at 4:20 of the third quarter to account for the final scoring.
Clarion took a 3-0 lead on their second possession of the game. Starting at its own 33, Rupert hit Pierre Odom for 19-yards to the KU 48, and two plays later, Clint Brown dashed 28 yards on a reverse to the Bear 18. After a first down run by Rupert to the KU 6, the drive stalled and Kyle Snoke came on to boot a 22-yard field goal with 4:09 left in the first quarter.
KU’s Spotts rushed for an 18-yard td with 14:47 remaining in the second quarter to give Kutztown a 6-3 and the PAT failed.
