IUP RALLLIES IN SECOND HALF PAST CLARION 33-7
(Indiana, Pa.): The game was a microcosm of the season for the Golden Eagles on Saturday at IUP’s G.P. Miller Stadium. Clarion led early and at halftime, but IUP rallied with a big second half to defeat the Golden Eagles 33-7 in what also served as Indiana’s Homecoming Day game.
IUP raised its record to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC-West, while Clarion dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the Western Division.
Clarion scored on its second possession of the game to take a 7-0 lead. Linebacker Zach Gourley put the Eagles in business when he recovered a punt that was touched by Anthony Rodriguez at the Clarion 45. Two plays later, true freshman qb Tyler Huether (Penn Trafford) fired a 36-yard strike to Pierre Odom to the IUP 19. On fourth and three at the IUP 12, Clarion went for the sticks and Huether rushed for 7 yards to the Indiana 5 and a first down. On first down Huether rolled right and found tight end Matt Foradora (Brockway) all alone in the endzone for the score. Kyle Snoke’s PAT gave Clarion a 7-0 lead with 9:45 left in the first.
IUP placekicker Nick Wallace booted his first of four field goals on the day, a 38-yarder with 15-seconds left in the first to cut the Clarion lead to 7-3.
The Golden Eagles had a great opportunity to take a commanding lead in the second quarter. With a drive starting at the IUP 49, Huether hit Odom for 27 yards to the IUP 20. Running back Eddie Emanuel ripped off an 11-yard run to the 9 and a first down. Huether then hit Herb Carraway with a sideline pass to the 6, and trying to fight for additional yardage, lost the ball and IUP’s Terrence Jackson recovered and returned the ball to the IUP 24.
IUP drove the ball to the Clarion 2, but the defense stiffened and forced Wallace to come on and kick a 23-yard field goal with 3:41 left in the second quarter keeping Clarion in the lead 7-6.
The defense came through again before halftime stopping an IUP drive. Clarion punter Nick Perla fumbled a snap and was dropped at his own 10 yard line with only 51-seconds left before intermission. But on the first play, Clarion All-America linebacker Matt Morris intercepted a Kevin Weidl pass at the 9, and the Golden Eagles lead at halftime 7-6.
Clarion fumbled the second half kickoff and Quinton Cobb recovered for IUP at the Clairon 12 yard line. Again the Clarion defense was up to the task and stopped the IUP offense on three downs, bringing Wallace in for his third field goal of the day, a 26-yarder, and IUP had its first lead of 9-7 with 13:47 left in the third quarter.
IUP expanded its lead on its next possession when it drove 49-yards in 4 plays for a touchdown. The scoring strike came on a Weidl pass out in the left flat to Tobias Robinson, who skirted down the left sideline 31-yards for the touchdown and a 16-7 IUP lead.
After a short Clarion punt into the wind gave IUP good field position at the Clarion 38, IUP took control of the game going the distance in 8 plays. This time Weidl tossed a 9-yard td pass on a post route to Anthony Cellitti and IUP led 23-7 with 3:44 left in the third quarter.
Clarion drove on its next possession from its own 11 to the IUP 29. The drive stalled and the Golden Eagles called on placekicker Kyle Snoke to try a 51-yard field goal. The boot was blocked at the line by Matt Scott.
IUP’s Wallace booted a 35-yard field goal with 10:45 left in the fourth for a 26-7 lead, then added a final touchdown when Weidl tossed a 15-yard scoring pass to Robinson and the 33-7 final.
Clarion totaled 218 yards of offense on the day including 22 rushing and 196 passing. Eddie Emanuel, who was averaging over 100 yards per game, was held to 29 yards on 10 carries. QB Tyler Huether completed 14 of 30 passes for 191 yards and 1 td. Pierre Odon grabbed 8 passes for 135 yards, and Matt Foradora collected 4 passes for 47 yards and 1 td.
IUP had 254 yards on the day including 123 rushing and 131 passing. Tailback Chris Morgan gained 99 yards on 19 carries, while Weidl hit on 13 of 23 passes for 131 yards and 3 td’s.
Clarion’s defense was led by Kevin Rigby who had 10 tackles and 1 tfl’, Matt Morris with 9 stops and 1 interception, and tackle Jimmy Simmons with a sack and 1 tfl.
Clarion has led East Region #2 ranked Bloomsburg (10-7) and #7 ranked IUP (7-6) at halftime this season, and trailed in two other games by only 3 points, but have struggled to score in the second half of games.
Clarion returns home next week to host Edinboro at Memorial Stadium with kickoff set for 6pm. IUP visits Shippensburg.
