KUTZTOWN DEFEATS CLARION 35-13
(CLARION, PA): Kutztown quarterback Kyle Spotts tossed 4 td passes to lead the Golden Bears to a 35-13 win over Clarion on Saturday night in a PSAC intra-league contest.
Clarion dropped to 0-2 overall, while Kutztown raised its record to 1-1.
Clarion outgained Kutztown on the evening 316-306, but a few costly Eagle mistakes and a Kutztown offense that was ready to capitalize on those mistakes made the difference.
Clarion had a chance to take the lead early, but Robert Mamula’s (Canon Mac) 39-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright and bounced away with 4:40 left in the first.
On Clarion’s next possession, Kutztown linebacker Tom Cressman picked off a deflected tyler Huether pass attempt at the Golden Eagle 23 and returned it for a touchdown to get the Bears on the board with a 7-0 lead at 2:10 of the first.
Clarion tied the game on its next possession when sophomore qb Tyler Huether (Penn Trafford) hit senior wideout Herb Carraway on look in pass and Carraway did the rest racing 65 yards for the tying td. Robert Mamula booted the PAT and the score was tied 7-7 at 1:05 of the first.
Clarion had another opportunity to take the lead toward the end of the first quarter, following feshman safety Shawn Sopic’s interception which had the Eagles in business at the Kutztown 38. After a first down the drive stalled and head coach Jay Foster called on Mamula to try a 49-yard field goal. His attempt hit the crossbar and bounced back keeping the game at 7-7.
Kutztown took the lead for good (14-7) driving 80 yards in 10 plays and scored when Spotts hit Alex Zukus on an 18 yard td pass at 6:45 of the second quarter.
On Clarion’s next possession Golden Eagle qb Tyler Huether tried a pitch to Eddie Emanuel on the option, but the pitch went behind Emmanuel and Kutztown recovered at Clarion’s 21. Facing third at 23 at the Eagle 34, Spotts faded back and drilled a td pass to Elfen Quiles and the Bears had a 21-7 lead.
Clarion drove 62-yards in 11 plays to score just before halftime. Clarion advanced to the KU 9, but an incomplete pass with 7 seconds left before intermission brought on freshman kicker Robert Mamula and the freshman booted a 25-yard field goal with 3 seconds left before halftime to cut the lead to 21-10.
Early in the second quarter Mamula booted a 32-yard field goal and Clarion cut the lead to 21-13 at 7:59, but Kutztown had the answer.
Ty Dinnis returned the kickoff 58 yards to the Clarion 32, and on first down, Spotts hit Will Brown on a post-patern for 32-yards and a back-breaking td, putting Kutztown ahead 28-13.
Spotts hit Quiles for an 8-yard td pass late in the third to make the final 35-13.
