BLOOMSBURG RUNS PAST CLARION 52-10
(CLARION, PA.): Bloomsburg’s Jamar Brittingham rushed for two second quarter touchdowns, breaking a 3-3 tie, as the Huskies went on to defeat Clarion 52-10 on Saturday night.
Played at Clarion’s Memorial Stadium and in front of a Family Day crowd of 4,500, Bloomsburg raised their season record to 2-2, while Clarion dropped to 0-4.
Bloomsburg opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal from Jon Koenig and led 3-0 at 13:09 of the second quarter.
Clarion tied the game 3-3 when Robert Mamula (Fr. Canon Mac) booted a 37-yard field goal with 10:20 to go in the second quarter.
Brittingham scored his first of three td’s with 7:55 left in the second quarter on a 3-yard run. The drive was 37-yards in 5 plays and gave Bloomsburg a 10-3 lead.
The Golden Eagles mounted an impressive drive late in the second quarter and had an opportunity to tie the game. Moving from the Clarion 38, the Eagles got two first downs, mostly from Eddie Emmanuel runs, to get the ball to the Bloomsburg 40. On third and 9 at the Bloom 39, sophomore qb Tyler Huether (Penn Trafford) avoided the rush and turned up field for a nifty 22-yard run to the Husky 17. But after getting to the Bloomsburg 9 yard line, Huether tried a pass into the endzone that was picked off by Phil Riccardi with only 1:50 left before intermission and returned out to the 10 yard line.
The Huskies used the turnover and the momentum to drive 90 yards in 10 plays. The big play in the drive was a fake field goal attempt from the Clarion 24, which holder Jeremy Lightner ran to the Clarion 3. Again Brittingham capped the drive with a 1-yard td run with only 7 seconds left before intermission and Bloomsburg had moved out to a 17-3 halftime lead.
Brittingham scored on a 4 yard td run early in the third quarter, then Clarion came back with a score of its own.
The Golden Eagles drove 57 yards in six plays to hit paydirt. Huethre hit Alfonso Hoggard for 24 yars on third and 7 from the Clarion 46, putting the pigskin on the Bloom 30. On this and 9 at the 29, Huether hit Pierre Odom behind the Bloomsburg defense for a 29-yard touchdown pass, bringing Clarion to within 24-10 at 6:53 of the third.
The Huskies drove down the field an the next possession and scored when qb Dan Latorre sneaked over from 1-yard out and Bloomsburg was up 31-10.
Bloomsburg scored three more times to win the game 52-10.
Clarion’s offense had several great scoring opportunities that came up empty. The Eagles drove the opening kickoff from the Clarion 28 to the Bloom 16 before the drive stalled. Mamula came on but missed a 33-yard field goal.
Late in the third Huether hit Fred Robinson for a 53-yard pass play to the Bloom 20, but Robinson had the ball knocked out of his hands on the tackle and Bloom recovered.
And early in the fourth quarter , after Huether hooked up with Pierre Odom for 47 yards to the Bloom 14, that drive also ended without points. From the Bloom 11 Huether was intercepted in the endzone by Bloomsburg’s Varnage.
Later in the fourth, with the Eagles on the Bloom 10, backup qb Gino Rometo had a pass intercepted at the 8-yard line stopping another Eagle scoring drive.
Clarion had 363 yards of offense including 148 rushing and 215 passing. Running back Eddie Emmanuel gained 104 yards on 21 carries. It was Emmanuel’s 7th career 100 yard game and his second this season.
Tyler Huether completed 10 of 27 passes for 200 yards and 1 td. Pierre Odom grabbed 7 aerials for 115 yards and 1 td.
Erik Yonish and Joe Fox posted 10 tackles each for the Golden Eagles.
Bloomsburg totaled 551 yards of offense including 379 rushing and 172 passing. Brittingham rushed 26 times for 132 yards and 3 td’s. Teammate Stefan Adams also rushed for 111 yards and 2 td’s.
QB Dan Latorre completed 11 of 18 passes for 172 yards. Brahin Bilal caught 7 passes for 116 yards.
Clarion travels to California next Saturday for a 3pm game that will be televised on Sportsfever TV. Bloomsburg visits West Chester.
