#7 WEST CHESTER DEFEATS CLARION 43-14
(WEST CHESTER, PA): West Chester freshman flanker Mike Washington caught a school record 5 td passes (7 catches, 242 yards) while leading the #7 rated Golden Rams to a 43-14 win over visiting Clarion in the NCAA Division II opener for both teams
West Chester is now 1-0 and Clarion is 0-1.
Washington opened the scoring in the first quarter on the game’s opening drive, grabbing a 64-yard td on a post-pattern as the Rams were facing third and three on their own 36.
Clarion bounced right back to tie the game 7-7 on its first possession of the game. Quarterback Erik Yonish hit Michael Byrd for a 65 yard td strike with the Eagles facing a third and six at the Clarion 35. Byrd caught the pigskin from Yonish on a shuffle pass at the Clarion 35 and simply outran the Ram defense to the endzone. Kyle Snoke’s PAT at 10:08 of the first locked the game at 7-7.
West Chester wasted no time in coming back to take a 14-7 lead. On its first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, Ram qb Matt Burdalski tossed another post-pattern bomb to Washington, this one from 67-yards out, which turned the momentum around and gave the Rams the lead for good.
Late in the first quarter Washington caught his third td pass, a 17-yard scoring play, giving West Chester a 21-7 lead at the 3:19 mark.
After WC’s Osagie Osunde scampered 44-yard to give West Chester a 27-7 lead, the Golden Eagles bounced back for another score. The offense drove 55-yards in 8 plays, culminating in Tyrone Buckner’s 1 yard run with 3:19 remaining in the second quarter. Clarion cut the Ram lead to 27-14. The td was set up on a key, third down pass from Yonish to Brandon Dando for 27 yards to the West Chester two yard line. Buckner took over from there.
The Clarion “D” held on West Chester’s next possession and gave the Golden Eagles a real opportunity to get back in the game. Clarion drove to the WC 45, but Yonish’s pass into the endzone was intercepted by Anthony Belasco ending the Eagle threat.
WC placekicker Alex Walsh booted a 30-yard field goal as time ran out before intermission giving the Rams a 30-14 halftime lead.
Washington caught two td passes in the third quarter giving the Rams a final victory of 43-14.
Clarion managed 274 yards of offense including 112 rushing and 162 passing. Tyrone Buckner rushed for 54 yards and 1 td on 18 carries. QB Erik Yonish completed 5 of 13 passes for 103 yards and 1 td, plus ran for 14 yards. Brandon Dando meanwhile completed 6 of 18 passes for 59 yards and ran 7 times for 44 yards. Michael Byrd grabbed 4 passes for 75 yards and 1 td.
West Chester gained 487 yards of offense including 165 rushing and 322 passing. Burdalksi completed 12 of 23 passes for 322 yards and 5 td’s. Osunde rushed for 94 yards and 1 td on 16 tries.
Leading Clarion’s defense was linebacker Matt Morris who had 9 tackles and 2 tfl’s, while Zach Gourley had 7 stops.
Clarion returns home to host Kutztown next Saturday at Memorial Stadium at 6pm. West Chester travels to North Dakota for a 2pm kickoff.
