Shippensburg Drops Clarion 37-0
(Shippensburg, Pa): Shippensburg running back Aaron Dykes rushed 25 times for 139 yards and 1 td, and Jamie Reder booted three field goals as the Red Raiders defeated Clarion 37-0 on Saturday afternoon at Seth Grove Stadium.
Shippensburg raised its record to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC-Western Division, while Clarion dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC-West.
Reder’s 27-yard field goal at 6:16 of the first quarter gave Shippensburg a 3-0 lead. The Red Raiders made it 10-0 with 50-seconds left in the first when Dykes scored on a 3-yard run and Ship led 10-0. The drive went 63 yards in only six plays.
Shippensburg then jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead when Red Raider qb Tony Gomez found halfback Kyle Fogarty alone in the middle of the field for a 32-yard td pass (12:12), and Reeder booted his second field goal from 33-yards out.
Clarion mounted a nice drive near the end of the second quarter, after the defense forced a short Shippensburg punt that traveled to its own 47-yard line.
Taking over with 5:17 left before intermission, the Eagles drove to the Ship 19-yard line, where on scond down, Yonish tried to hit tight end John Dominic on s short route down the left sideline, but the pass was intercepted at the 16 by Raider linebacker Frank Duffy and returned out to the 32.
In the third quarter the Eagles again had three good scoring chances in Raider territory. Cedric Bowling forced a fumble and Rich McCune recovered for the eagles at the Ship 43. But on first down Josh Province fumbled the ball right back to the Raiders.
The Eagles started their next drive at their own 45 and again drove to the Ship 30. Clarion qb Erik Yonish hit Michael Byrd for 14 yards to the Ship 30 to put the Eagles in business. But Clarion failed on four straight plays to gain another yard and turned the ball over on downs.
Reeder booted a 24-yard field goal, his third of the day, to give Ship a 23-0 lead with 7:00 left in the third.
Mike Harris put the lid on the game with a 29-yard td catch from backup qb Rick Henshaw with 3:42 left in the third and a 30-0 lead.
Clarion tried to score again, keyed by a 34-yard pass from Yonish to Dominic to the Raider 34. Moving to the 26, Yonish tossed a pass over the middle, but it was picked off at the Ship 17 by Jonathan Aldridge and the Eagles were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the game.
Ship outgained Clarion 341-204. Clarion had 95 rushing yards and 109 passing yards on the day.
QB Erik Yonish (Bethel Park) ran 13 times for 76 yards and completed 10 of 38 passes for 109 yards and 3 interceptions.
Josh Province caught 3 passes for 24 yards.
Clarion’s defense was led by Zach Gourley who had 12 total tackles, with corner Quintyn Brazil posting 11 hits. Linebacker Brock Luke made 8 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, including a qb sack, and Kevin Rigby had 10 hits and 2 tfl’s.
The Raiders had 235 rushing yards and 106 passing. Tony Gomez completed 3 of 11 for 54 yards and Henshaw connected on 3 of 8 for 52 yards.
Clarion returns home to host IUP next Saturday night at 6pm. Shippensburg travels to Slippery Rock.
