PSAC-WEST GAME
CLARION HOSTS LOCK HAVEN SATURDAY NIGHT
With a 2-4 overall record, Clarion
returns home again this Saturday to host Lock Haven in a PSAC-West game. Kickoff
at Clarion’s Memorial Stadium is set for 6pm.
The contest can be heard on the
Golden Eagle football network which includes WCCR-FM, 92.7 and WKQW-FM, 96.3, as
well as on the internet at Redzonemedia.com with Mike Kalinowski describing the
action and Pat Kahle providing the color commentary.
CLARION 2-4 IN 2005
Clarion enters the game with a 2-4
overall record and an 0-2 mark in the PSAC-West. The Golden Eagles have lost
three straight including last week’s 56-0 Homecoming Day loss to #14 rated East
Stroudsburg. The Eagles have also lost 44-0 at #21 Edinboro and 43-7 at Cal in
the last three weeks. Clarion opened the season with a 43-14 loss at #7 ranked
West Chester, then returned home to defeat Kutztown 29-23 in a PSAC record four
overtime game, and won the next Saturday over Mansfield 15-12 when running back
Dave Murzynski scored on a 1-yard run with 22-seconds remaining to claim
victory.
LUKE IN HIS 12TH YEAR AT CLARION
Clarion head coach Malen Luke is in
his 12th season directing the Golden Eagle football team. He has a career record
of 56-70 at Clarion while leading the Golden Eagles to PSAC-West titles in 1996
and 2000. The 1996 squad finished 11-3 and lost in the NCAA D-II semifinal game
to Northern Colorado 19-18 in the final seconds. The 1996 team was the Lambert
Cup winner in the East and finished the season ranked 8th in the country. Luke’s
Eagles were also a strong 7-4 in 2000 and in 2002, while Malen was voted the
PSAC-West “Coach of the Year” in 1996 and 2000. Luke’s 18-year collegiate record
stands at 93-91.
LOCK HAVEN 2-5/0-2 - JOHN KLACIK IN FIRST SEASON
Lock Haven enters the game with a 2-5
overall record and an 0-2 mark in the PSAC-Western Division. The Bald Eagles
opened the season with a 17-16 win at Cheyney, then ran into a buzzsaw at James
Madison and Towson. JMU defeated Lock Haven 56-0 and Towson posted a 70-0
victory over the Eagles. The next two weeks saw Bloomsburg defeat Lock Haven
63-0 and Slippery Rock post a 55-7 victory. After posting its second win of the
year over Mansfield 24-12, Shippensburg dropped Lock Haven last week 26-7.
Lock Haven is under the tutelage of
first year head coach John Klacik. Klacik came to LHU from Youngstown State
where he was the offensive coordinator for four season. Prior to that he was a
position coach at YSU for 12-years under Jim Tressel and part of four national
championship teams. He went to Wake Forest for the 2000 season, then returned to
YSU. Klacik was a standout receiver at Lock Haven and had 1,976 career receiving
yards before graduating in 1988.
CLARION LEADS SERIES 39-14-1 DATING BACK TO 1928
Clarion leads the overall series
between the two schools by a 39-14-1 margin dating back to 1928. Last year the
Bald Eagles won a 16-13 overtime decision, while Clarion won the 2003 game by a
22-9 margin. In the last ten seasons Clarion leads by an 7-3 margin and has won
five of the last six meetings. Clarion wins over that span came in 2003 (22-9),
2002 (34-31), 2001 (13-0), 2000 (42-20), 1999 (44-41 overtime), 1996 (57-3) and
1995 (49-32). Lock Haven wins came in 2004 (16-13), 1998 (35-28) and 1997
(33-32).
CLARION OFFENSE AVERAGING 243.5 YARDS T.O.
Clarion enters Saturday’s game ranked
#12 in the PSAC in total offense getting 243.5 yards per game and #13 in scoring
with 10.8 points per game. The Eagles rank #11 in rushing offense with 114.2
yards per game and #12 in passing with 129.3 yards per contest.
BRANDON DANDO READY TO START AT QB
Junior qb Brandon Dando will likely
start at qb on Saturday, while sophomore Erik Yonish, who started against West
Chester and left the game with an injury, and played some against Mansfield,
California and East Stroudsburg, will also likely be ready for duty.
Dando, the PSAC-West “Offensive
Player of the Week” against Kutztown, has completed 60 of 129 passes for 590
yards and 1 td. He has also run for 94 yards and 2 td’s.
Yonish meanwhile has connected on 16
of 31 aerials for 180 yards and 1 td. He has also rushed for 50 yards this
season.
BUCKNER & MURZYNSKI CLARION’S TOP RUNNERS
The running game will likely fall on
the shoulders of sophomore Tyrone Buckner and freshman Dave Murzynski. Buckner
leads the way with 266 yards and 2 td’s on 92 attempts, while Murzynski has 207
yards and 2 td’s on 52 attempts. Also expected to tote the pigskin will be Josh
Province (19 rushes, 57 yards, 14 catches, 89 yards).
The fullback position will see either
senior Dave Coyle or talented sophomore Michael Byrd in the game. Byrd leads the
Golden Eagles in receiving with 18 catches for 201 yards and 1 td. Coyle has 5
rushes for 21 yards.
YOUNG RECEIVING CORPS READY TO CONTRIBUTE
The receiving corps will likely have
red-shirt freshman Anthony Easterling (15 catches, 192 yards, 1 td), junior
Jewell Stephens (10 catches, 88 yards), transfer Vince Kirk (2 grabs, 23 yards)
and freshman Matt Foradora (3 receptions, 33 yards), all ready to catch passes.
Junior John Dominic (3 catches, 44 yards) and senior Greg Mahaffey (4 grabs, 37
yards) expect to see time at tight end.
CLARION DEFENSE READY FOR SATURDAY
In 2005 Clarion’s defense is ranked
#13 in total defense giving up 472.2 yards per game, while ranked #12 in scoring
defense yielding 36.8 points per game. The Eagles are permitting 206.8 yards per
game rushing (#10 in PSAC) and 265.3 passing yards (#14 in PSAC) per game.
NIEDBALA ANCHORS DOWN LINEMEN
Up front senior Matt Niedbala (13
tackles, 2 tfl’s), red-shirt freshman Deonte Cooley (6 hits, 1 tfl), plus
sophomores Cedric Bowling (6 stops) and Matt Ritter (26 tackles, 5 tfl’s, 2
sacks) are ready to lead the way.
RIGBY LEADS OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS
Guarding the perimeters will be
junior Kevin Rigby (36 stops; 1 int, 4 break-ups), senior Conrad Warner,
red-shirt freshmen Jim McHale (4 stops, 1 int), Corey Giles (24 stops, 6 tfl’s,
4 sacks) and sophomore transfer Jimmy Simmons (7 stops, 1 tfl). Ribgy was a
third team All-Region selection in 2004.
MORRIS, GOURLEY & LUKE PROVIDE LB STRENGTH
The inside linebacking spots are
talented with the return of juniors Matt Morris and Zach Gourley and senior
Brock Luke . Morris is the team’s leader with 60 tackles and 13 tfl’s. Gourley
has 38 stops and 5 tfl’s, while Luke has 19 tackles and 1 int.
SECONDARY MISSING BUSCH
Senior free safety Bo Busch will miss
the remainder of the season due to a leg injury. He had 15 stops and 1 break-up
this season. In 2004 he led the PSAC with 119 tackles, 2 int’s, 4 fumbles
caused, and was a third team AP and Football Gazette All-American. In three
seasons he has 292 tackles, 10 fumbles caused, 6 int’s and 5 tfl’s.
Replacing Busch in the secondary will
be Elijah Evans, who has 15 tackles and 1 break up this season.
Senior Jordan Hicks (54 tackles, 4 tfl’s) returns at strong safety, while senior
James Charles (24 hits, 1 int), junior Dwaon Woodard (22 tackles, 4 break-ups, 4
blocked kicks, 1 int) and freshman Brian Edwards (5 stops) are back at the
corners.
LOCK HAVEN OFFENSE #14 IN PSAC
Lock Haven’s offense is ranked #14 in
he PSAc averaging 173.1 yards per game and 14th in scoring getting 7.9 points
per game. The Bald Eagles get 90.6 rushing yards (13th in PSAC) and 82.6 passing
yards (14th in PSAC) per outing.
Lock Haven’s will have either Jason Eby (29 of 88, 131 yards, 6 int’s), Corey
Cicilioni (4 of 11, 85 yards, 1 td) or Brian Camberg (21 of 37, 161 yards, 2
int’s) at quarterback.
The running game will feature John
Kaluzny (68 rushes, 294 yards), Chelstan Anderson (64 attempts, 277 yards, 3
td’s) at tailback and Brian Tomasovitch (5 carries, 11 yards, 1 td).
The receivers will have Adam Lawrence
(13 grabs, 134 yards, 2 td’s), Kyle McCloe (9 catches, 73 yards) and Troy Wile
(6 receptions, 28 yards) at the wideouts and Jason Walther (11 catches, 107
yards) at tight end.
LOCK HAVEN DEFENSE #12 IN PSAC
The Lock Haven defense is #12 in
total defense in the PSAC giving up 431.6 yards per game along with a 14th
ranking in scoring defense giving up 42.6 points per game. Opponents are getting
243.7 rushing yards (#13 in PSAC) and 187.9 passing yards (#10 PSAC) per game.
Up front tackles Ryan Bickel (20
tackles, 5 tfl’s)and Ali Malone (28 hits, 5 tfl’s), are joined by ends Jeff
Eaton (23 tackles, 7 tfl’s) and Brad Sones (35 stops, 13 tfl’s).
The linebacking corps includes
Jonathan Nalewak (47 hits, 1 int), Mike Slatcoff (21 stops) and Derek Harsch (46
tackles).
The secondary has team tackle leader
David Show (65 stops, 5 tfl’s) at strong safety and Corey Gildea (34 jolts) at
free safety. The corners are covered by Mike Nesby (19 hits, 1 int) and Samuel
Jefferson (12 tackles).
CLARION NOTES: Last year LH won in overtime 16-13... Clarion rallied to
tie the game 10-10 with 20-seconds left in regulation on an 11-yard pass from
Dando to Joe Farkas... Clarion got to the 3 in the overtime, but had to call on
Kyle Snoke for the field goal and a 13-10 lead... LH QB Tim Storino hit Rafael
Smith on a 24-yard pass to the 1, then Travis Diehl scored from there to give LH
the win ... In 2003 Clarion won 22-9 over Lock Haven... The defense had a big
game posting 6 interceptions... Troy Bowers returned an int 22-yards for a
score... With the game tied 9-9 in the fourth, Marcus Lowe scored on a 1-yard
run (4:59 left) and Felton Woulard scored on an 8-yard run (0:44 remaining)...
Bo Busch and Jabari Weatherspoon had 2 interceptions each... Three years ago
Clarion topped Lock Haven 34-31 at Lock Haven... Clarion scored 27 second half
points including 20 in the fourth to seal the win... QB Adam Almashy ran for 163
yards and 1 td, plus passed for 66 yards... Robert Walker also ran for 151 yards
and 1 td as Clarion rushed for 468 yards, the second most in school history...
LH QB Tim Storino passed for 290 yards and 2 td’s ... Burkely grabbed 5 passes
for 124 yards and 1 td.... In 2001 Clarion topped Lock Haven 13-0 at Lock Haven
... Demetric Gardner ran for 112 yards and 1 td ... Adam Almashy completed 13 of
20 passes for 164 yards ... Clarion had 427 yards, while Lock Haven had 106
yards of offense ... Clarion won (42-20 in 2000) and (44-41 in 3 overtimes in
1999) - Both games were in Clarion due to new PSAC schedules taking over ... In
2000 Clarion rushed for a school record 443 yards including 177 and 2 td’s by
Robert Walker and 169 by fullback Tab Musser ... In 1999's Senior Day game,
Clarion placekicker Frank VanWert booted a 34-yard field goal in the third
overtime to give Clarion a 44-41 win... Clarion travels to Shippensburg for an
October 22nd meeting... That game will start at 1pm.
