CLARION DEFEATS KUTZTOWN 29-23 IN FOUR OVERTIMES
(CLARION, PA): Clarion quarterback Brandon Dando scored on a 3-yard run and the defense held in the fourth overtime on Saturday night, giving the Golden Eagles a 29-23 win over Kutztown.
Held at Memorial Stadium, Clarion raised its record to 1-1 while Kutztown fell to 0-2.
Dando helped the Golden Eagles rally in the fourth
quarter to send the game into overtime. After Kevin Rigby intercepted a Kutztown
pass at the Golden Eagle 10 and returned it to the Clarion 37 with 8:16 left in
the game. After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty put the ball at the
Kutztown 48, the Eagles drove to paydirt in 9 plays with Dando scoring from the
1. Kyle Snoke’s PAT with 5:14 left in the game tied the score at 16.
Neither team scored in the first overtime. In the second overtime Clarion went ahead 23-16 when Tyrone Buckner scored on a 2-yard run.
Kutztown came back and saw qb Kyle Spotts toss a 6-yard td pass to James Brooks to tie the game at 23-23.
In the third overtime Clarion’s Dwaon Woodard blocked a Kutztown field goal attempted from 35-yards out, then Kutztown’s Michael Baldwin blocked a 36-yard Clarion field goal attempt to put the game into the fourth overtime.
Clarion owned the first possession, and on third and three at the Kutztown three, Dando rolled right, couldn’t find a receiver and dove just inside the pylon for the game-winning td.
Kutztown got to the 22-yard line on first down, then threw three incomplete passes to end the game.
Clarion outgained Kutztown 385-188 in total offense and dominated time of possession with a 38:46 – 21:14 advantage.
Dando completed 15 of 28 passes for 143 yars, plus ran for 18 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tyrone Buckner led the running game with 39 carried for 106 yars and 1 td, while Dave Murzynski carried 20 times for 99 yards and 1 score.
Kutztown qb Kyle Spotts completed 21 of 41 passes for 152 yards and 1 td, with James Brooks catching 9 passes for 66 yards and 1 score.
Running back Maurice Adams gained 62 yards on 19-carries.
Kutztown opened the scoring on a 42-yard Matt Scartozzi field goal at 12:06 of the first.
Clarion’s Dave Murzynski put Clarion head 7-3 when he dashed 12-yards for a score at 8:35 of the first.
Clarion was ready to score again early in the second when Murzynski fumbled at the Kutztown 2, and Michael Baldwin scooped up the pigskin and ran 98-yards for at Kutztown td and a 10-7 lead with 10:00 left in the second.
Kutztown’s Kyle Spotts scored on a 1-yard run in the second, but the Eagles tacked on two points when the PAT was blocked by Dwaon Woodard and returned 88-yards by Herb Carraway. Clarion’s defensive conversion left the score 16-9 in Kutztown’s favor, until Dando’s run tied the game late in the fourth.
Clarion is off next week and returns to Memorial Stadium to host Mansfield on September 17th at 6pm.
Kutztown hosts Southern Connecticut next Saturday at 1:05pm.
