IUP RALLIES TO DROP CLARION 30-10
(CLARION, PA): Down 10-7 at halftime, IUP rallied for 23 unanswered second half points, keyed by two Chris Morgan third quarter touchdowns and dropped Clarion 30-10 on Saturday night.
Held at Clarion’s Memorial Stadium the Golden Eagles dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the PSAC-West. Indiana raised its record to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC-West.
Late in the third quarter with Clarion still ahead 10-7, IUP’s Victor Callahan blocked Chris Perla’s punt and Ken Witter recovered at the Clarion 14 yard line. Two plays later Morgan ran in from three yards out and IUP led 14-10 with 5:06 left in the third.
IUP’s Mike Chiapetta intercepted Clarion qb Erik Yonish’s pass on the next possession at the IUP 35 and returned it to the Clarion 32.
IUP qb Andrew Krewatch tossed a screen pass to Morgan and the IUP running back took the ball 31-yards for the touchdown and a comfortable 21-10 lead with 3:50 left in the third.
Clarion drove to the IUP 2 on its next possession and had first and goal. But the IUP defense stiffened and held Clarion on downs.
IUP added a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and IUP’s Garrett Majors posted a 45-yard interception return on the game’s final play for the final points.
After IUP took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 5-yard run by Morgan, the Golden Eagles rallied to take the lead.
With 5:27 left in the second quarter, Clarion defensive back James Charles tackled Morgan in the endzone for a Clarion safety cutting the Indian lead to 7-2.
Clarion’s Dwaon Woodard returned the free kick 28-yards to midfield, and the Eagles drove 50-yards in 8 plays to find paydirt. The big play came on third and 6 at the IUP 32. Yonish found Josh Province for 31-yards to the IUP 1. On second down, Michael Byrd scored the Clarion td fro the 2. Yonish then hit Brandon Dando for the two-point conversion and Clarion led 10-7 with 2:20 left before intermission.
Clarion had 246 yards of total offense including 113 rushing and 133 passing. Michael Byrd had 22 carries for 54 yards and 1 td. Yonish gained 51 yards on 15 carries, plus completed 12 of 25 passes for 133 yards.
Indiana had 309 yards of offense including 209 rushing and 100 passing. Chris Morgan had 32 caries for 169 yards and 2 td’s on the ground and grabbed 4 passes for 39 yards and 1 td.
QB Andrew Krewatch completed 10 of 13 passes for 100 yards and 1 td.
Clarion’s defense was led by linebacker Matt Morris who had 14 tackles and 1 tfl. Matt Ritter had 11 stops and 3 tfl’s.
IUP’s defense was led by Ty Desiderio who had 12 tackles and 2 tfl’s.
Clarion finishes its season next Saturday when it hosts Slippery Rock at 6pm. IUP returns home to host Cal.
