CAL DROPS CLARION 43-7
(CALIFORNIA, PA): California running back Antoine Bagwell scored 5 first half touchdowns in leading the Vulcans to a 43-7 victory over Clarion on Saturday night at California’s Adamson Stadium.
The Vulcans upped their record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC-West, while Clarion dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC-West.
Cal opened the scoring at 12:50 of the first quarter when Brandon Jackson grabbed a 17-yard td pass from Joe Ruggiero and the Vulcans led 6-0. Cal went 80 yards in only 5 plays on their first possession.
Bagwell, who rushed for 204 yards and 4 td’s in the game, caught a 38-yard td pass from Ruggiero with 6:26 left in the first to take a 13-0 lead.
Then, after Cal safety Jared Drumm intercepted a Brandon Dando pass at the Clarion 36, the Vulcans needed only 4 plays to hit paydirt when Bagwell scampered 34-yards for a score and a 19-0 lead with 4:49 left in the first quarter.
Another Clarion turnover, this one on a fumble by Clarion wideout Tony Easterling, Cal recovered at the Golden Eagle 26 by Mike Dodson.
Bagwell answered by scoring from 9-yards out to jump the score to 26-0 with 11:02 left in the second.
Bagwell scored on runs of 26 and 62 yards to give California a 40-0 halftime lead.
Dustin Pizzuto booted a 31-yard field goal at 1:35 of the third quarter to extend Cal’s lead to 43-0.
Clarion scored its touchdown in the fourth quarter when the Golden Eagle offense drove 68-yards in 11 plays and scored with 5:39 remaining in the game. QB Brandon Dando capped the drive with a look in pass from the 8-yard line to Tony Easterling, who caught the ball at the 2 and fought his way into the endzone. Kyle Snoke’s PAT ended the scoring with the final at 43-7.
Clarion had 210 yards of total offense including 91 on the ground and 119 passing. Tyrone Buckner rushed for 49 yards on 16 carries, while Dando hit on 10 of 18 passes for 84 yards and 1 td. He also rushed for 36 yards on 8 carries.
Tony Easterling grabbed 3 passes for 27 yards and 1 td and Josh Province had 4 catches for 36 yards.
Jordan Hicks, James Charles and Kevin Rigby had 6 tackles each, while Matt Ritter recovered a fumble for the Golden Eagles.
Cal rushed for 328 yards and passed for 231 for a total offense of 559. QB Joe Ruggiero completed 10 of 16 passes for 150 yards and 2 td’s, while Mike Humbert was 6 of 15 for 81 yards.
Clarion visits Edinboro next Saturday for a 2pm kickoff.
