KUTZTOWN BIG PLAYS TOP CLARION 25-14
(KUTZTOWN, PA): Kutztown scored 21 second half points directly off Clarion turnovers and defeated the Golden Eagles 25-14 at University Field on Saturday afternoon.
Kutztown evened its overall record at 1-1, while Clarion fell to 0-2.
Kutztown led 6-0 at halftime, then made it a 12-0 advantage when Yusef Turner blocked Joe Farkas’ punt attempt at the Clarion 15 and teammate Matt Millard scooped up the pigskin at the Clarion 12 and ran it into the endzone for a 12-0 lead at 10:48 of the third quarter.
Clarion mounted a nice drive to the Kutztown19 late in the third quarter. On third and five at the 19, qb Brandon Dando tossed a first down pass to tight end Dan Tucker at the 10 yard line, but while being tackled, fumbled the pigskin and Kuztown recovered at the 14.
The Clarion “D” held and after a short punt, the Eagles got the ball back on the Bear 40. Dando tried a quick out on second down and Bear corner Michael Baldwin stepped in front for the interception and returned the ball 65-yards for a td and a 19-0 lead with 0:27 left in the third.
Clarion tried to jump back in the game when the Golden Eagles drove 47-yards in 7 plays to paydirt. The big play was a 16-yard pass from Dando to Farkas to the KU 9. Two plays later Marcus Lowe scored on a 3-yard run and Kyle Snoke’s PAT at 9:06 remaining had Clarion behind 19-7.
Kutztown’s Yusef Turner dashed Clarion hopes later in the fourth when he recovered Lance Fink’s fumble at the Eagle 12 and scampered into the endzone for a touchdown and Kutztown was back on top 25-7 with 5:57 left in the game.
Clarion drove 71-yards in 6 plays and scored on a 3-yard run from Marcus Lowe with 3:39 remaining.
Clarion got the ball back with 3:10 remaining and got to the Kutztown 48 before turning the pigskin over on downs.
Clarion dominated the second half with 205 offensive yards to Kutztown’s 38, but turnovers were the difference.
Clarion dodged several bullets in the first half to keep the score at 6-0 Kutztown. After Tony Bria gave Kutztown a 6-0 lead on a 6-yard run with 5:21 left in the first, the Bears penetrated Eagle territory three times but the defense turned the Bears away.
Jhermel Goss intercepted a Jeremy Copeland pass at the Clarion12 to start the second quarter, then on the Bears next drive, Zach Gourley blocked a Matt Scartozzi field goal attempt from the Eagle 26. In the Bears last possession of the first half, Elijah Evans intercepted Copeland’s pass attempt at the Clarion 45 to stop that drive.
Clarion had 251 yards of total offense to Kutztown’s 292. Clarion running back Marcus Lowe rushed for 86 yards and 1 td on 20 carries, while qb Brandon Dando completed 11 of 22 passes for 141 yards. Joe Farkas grabbed 3 passes for 72 yards.
Bo Busch led the defense with 10 tackles, Tim Connelly had 8 stops and 4 tfl’s and Dwaon Woodard had 8 hits.
Kutztown saw running back Tony Bria gain 118 yards and1 td on 25 carries, while qb Jeremy Copeland completed 16 of 30 passes for 175 yards. James Brooks caught 6 passes for 89 yards.
Clarion travels to Mansfield next Saturday, and Kutztown travels to Lock Haven.
